What’s Happening this week, July 23-29

From the Manager

Well last week at this time, inferior toilet paper and reminding people about showers were the big things on my radar. Oh how I wish to go back to such simpler days. One strange week it was, and in Mayberry we do not live any longer.

So those of you wondering what in the world I’m talking about probably skipped reading the message sent out mid-week. The one about the car being stolen. Well after that message went out we have noticed a marked uptick in people checking in their wallets, purses and keys.  We actually weren’t prepared for the higher number of people doing so, but please know we are working on solutions, both for now and for the future as well.

Now I don’t want to turn the club into is a police state where we are checking everyone’s ID when they enter, but certainly there are some things that we should be able to do to make things more secure with regards to your belongings. It’s a work in progress and I am open to your ideas and suggestions.

Another thing that happened this past week is that we had our first poop in the pool since the 2016 season.  Now that’s disappointing for sure, but keep in mind that the no-poop-year in 2017 was really an anomaly. Just a reminder to everyone about our Double Down Diaper Policy.  It’s first a disposable swim diaper, that’s SWIM DIAPER, not just a disposable diaper, as the first layer. This is then covered by a reusable diaper cover. With the nice weather we’ve had there’s been a run on both the disposable, as well as the reusable that we keep on hand.  We’ve re-ordered and should have more in stock soon. In the meantime if you are bringing little ones to the pool please plan ahead, and if you are bringing guest, please share with them this policy as well so they aren’t surprised when they get to the pool. Click the link above for more info.

Now it’s going to be another hot one this week! I’ve already started preparations by setting the pool thermostat to a lower temp and by this time tomorrow the boiler will probably be off for what looks like an extended period of time. As I’ve mentioned in the past, 84 degrees is our normal operating temperature, but when the weather gets to be like it’s supposed to be this week the pool will continue to gain heat during the day, so if the pool is set at 84, it can get as warm as 88 by the late afternoon, which pretty much feels like bath water. Yuk!  The only way around this is to try to start the day at around 80.  This can make the early morning activities in the pool a bit more invigorating than usual. Also, leaving the pool covers off does help to dissipate this heat overnight but it really just allows the pool temp to drop back down to 80 again the next day, where it just starts all over again.

This week we have our last home meet of the season on Tuesday. Despite the fact that the pool will be closed again on another glorious summer evening keep in mind that we don’t host any of the post-season meets here at WW this year. I just got word that volunteers are still needed for this meet see the swim team request below.

We will start our pick-up water polo games on Wed night for 13 and up.

The Adult Meet is on Saturday… GO WW!

What’s this updates?
  • New toilet paper has arrived! It will be put into use as the old paper is used up.
  • The hand dryer part took longer than expected to come in, but it was installed today!
What’s this?

This is sort of like a Roomba for the pool. It’s actually a Dolphin Robotic Pool Cleaner Diagnostic 2001. We’ve had 5 of these, including the current two we have in service over the last 20 years. Now the reason we have two of them is that we simply cannot live without one! See, in the past when our Dolphin wasn’t working and needed repairs there was an immediate impact on the cleanliness of the pool. It would also take a couple of weeks turn around to be repaired, and that was just too long. Now the last time the older of our units broke down I decided to order a new one as we would received it much sooner than going the repair route. And indeed that was the case. In a couple of days we had a Dolphin back in the pool doing it’s thing. Now that old unit did not get cast aside, oh no, in fact there was now time to figure out what was wrong, find the parts, and repair it in house. Since that time both of these units have needed repairs off and on, which all have been done in house, saving both time and money. We’ve also always had a back-up to go to as well.

Typically we set one of these loose in the pool nightly. For the most part it does a pretty decent job of getting all sorts of things off of the bottom of the pool, it can get stuck though on goggles or pool toys let in the pool. If you find at the end of the day that the guards are asking for help in getting things out of the pool, please lend them a hand. It makes the Dolphins much happier!

What’s Happening July 16 – 22

Believe it or not we have already reached the middle of the season and with that I spent this past Saturday morning swapping out our dirty filter grids with brand new ones!  Oh the things that make a pool manager happy…

We are in the process of cleaning the grids that were removed and with any luck we’ll make it to the end of the season without another swap out. The one thing that you can do to help ensure our pool, and subsequently our filters stay as clean as possible is to take a good cleansing shower prior to entering the pool. That means just getting wet for a couple of seconds really doesn’t cut it.

Another thing that you can do is to not glop sunscreen on and then hop right into the pool. The same thing goes for the spray product as well. Directions on sunscreen do say to apply 15 minutes prior to exposure. Please do this! Otherwise you waste it, it comes off in the pool, and well, then it’s not screening much sun either. And it will turn those new filters nasty in no time!

Now the perennial question is whether or not the shower will wash off the sunscreen. I would say there has to be a happy place where you can still have sunscreen on and a shower too.

Last thing, for those of you swimming early laps on Monday morning, sorry about the “freezing” showers. I anticipated this and tried to get the showers warmed up a tad for you but our boiler went into what is called lockout mode and shut itself off sometime after we turned it back on last night. They should be warmer on Tuesday.

Enjoy the weather and enjoy the pool!

Lessons – Member registration for session 3 is coming up this Wednesday starting at 8:30am. Now our lessons have not been full this summer so if you have non-member friends that are looking to get their kids into lesson please let them know!  Session 3 registration for non-members not currently enrolled will be on Friday starting at 8:30am.

What’s this?

This is the brand of toilet paper we have been using for the last couple of years and sometime between last season and this season there has been a definite change in it’s composition. While it’s still a green product, and soft as ever, we are finding that this particular toilet tissue actually starts to disintegrate as soon as someone starts pulling on it. This is causing more of the tissue to end up on the floor.

This has made the cleaning methods we have employed in the past basically ineffective as the paper tends to disintegrate even more and with the already moist environment in the locker rooms we are finding that sweeping and vacuuming are both ineffective as well. I want you to know that we are indeed trying our best to figure out a method of cleaning and as we use up the remaining rolls of this product we have started the search for a replacement.  In the meantime, please help us by getting all the paper you pull off the roll into the bowl!

Weekend Update… 😎…and a Request

It looks like we have a fantastic weekend ahead and things should certainly be hopping at the pool.  We have the Cake Bake as well as a Fun Float happening on Saturday night and while I anticipate this being a very well attended event, I believe that this Sunday is shaping up to likely be the busiest day of this 2018 season. In anticipation, I have already scheduled some extra guard coverage, and at this time, we are not putting any more parties on the calendar. Be prepared if you come mid to late in the day as an empty lounge chair or an umbrella will likely be hard to find.

Typically, about once every other season or so, things line up perfectly to create a situation where we experience extremely high pool usage. To help ensure the pool remains a pleasant place for our membership we are asking that this weekend, especially on Sunday, to please limit the number of guests that you bring. Bring them in early between 12-3, or think about bringing them on another day altogether.

I don’t think most people realize when they are bringing in one or two guests with them that it’s really that big of an impact, but when every other member also using the facility is bringing in that same one or two guests it starts to add up.

Thank you for being mindful of this request, and see you at the pool!

This will be a first come first served registration as per our usual process. If you have questions or would like more information please contact us.

What’s Happening July 9th – 15th…

Yippie! Summer has arrived!

We’re back to a more “normal” summer week at the pool.  We do have our first away meet at Blue Ridge on Tuesday, so those of you that like a nearly empty pool to swim in, take note.  You might also want to make a note that on Thursday we host another home meet so the pool will be closing early on that afternoon at 4pm. We are still looking for volunteers for that meet.  Sign up to help in the lobby at the pool, and/or on team unify if you have swimmer on the team.

Our first Sunday morning laps was well attended. While we are still trying to work out the details as to when and how to switch from the 6 lane format back to 3. What I do know is that we will have 6 lanes from 11am-noon, and then 3 lanes from noon-1pm. It’s how we set those three lanes up at noon that we are still ironing out as there’s both pros and cons to leaving them in place, in the east-west 25 yard configuration, or moving them into north-south 25 meter set up. We’ll get it ironed out and see how it goes this coming Sunday.

There’s still time to join the WW Adult Team!  Workouts – 8-9pm Monday and Wednesday. Note that during this workout time our general swim lap lane configuration will not be available.

The annual Cake Bake is coming up this coming Saturday! The Cake Bake is an annual tradition at Wedgwood.  Once a year children, families, or friends bake and decorate cakes according to a theme.  It is a tasty way to express your creativity and pretend you work on for the Food Network. After the judging, cake and ice cream is served by the staff.
Theme: SEASONS
Schedule: Cakes should arrive by 6:30pm, viewing from 7-7:30, judging around 7:30 and then serving them up after that until they are gone.

There will also be a fun float from 7-9:30pm on Saturday as well. There will not be lap lanes during this time.

Enjoy the weather and enjoy the pool!  Just please take a GOOD shower before getting in! Thanks!

  • DEADLINE: Wednesday, July 11th.
  • Delivery will be 3-4 weeks from the deadline.

What’s this?

This is the underside of the hand dryer that’s currently not working in the womens’ locker room. Not a big surprise that the motor has gone out in this unit given that it was installed in 1992. A replacement motor was difficult to find but has been ordered. My hope is to have it back up and running next weekend.

From the Manager

With the holiday coming up in the middle of the week, and no swim meets, this week has the promise of well earned respite.  The pool schedule will remain otherwise normal with exception of July 4th. Details are listed below.

For our lap swimmers we will be adding an Adult Lap Swim on Sunday mornings starting this coming Sunday, July 8th. The swim will run from 11am – Noon, and 6 lanes will be available

I’m heading north but y’all have a happy fourth!

Cake bake is coming…  Save the date, Saturday, July 14th.

What’s this?

This is our Chemtrol! This little thing helps keep our chemicals in check by monitoring the water 24/7 and automatically making adjustments to keep both the chlorine and ph in the pool within their proper parameters. Now we still check both it and the water hourly while the pool is open as it’s not always 100% reliable, but it certainly does make the job much easier than it used to be. We’ve had some version of this unit for over 20 years now and I believe this is our 4th one, which was installed prior to last season.

What’s Happening – June 25th – July 1st 😎

From the Manager

Ready, Set… Full summer ops are finally here! And it is a very busy week to kick things off. On top of everything that normally goes on we also have not one, but two home meets, so the pool will be closing at 4pm on both Tuesday and Thursday. It’s also team picture day on Tuesday, the schedule for that is below. Swim team tie dye activity is taking place on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. And to cap it all off the swim team overnighter on will be Saturday night (registration form here).

Just a reminder to the early morning lap swimmers that starting tomorrow lanes 1 and 2 may be utilized for swim team practice starting at 7am. Also keep in mind that the locker rooms will likely be much more crowded now as you exit this swim.

Some ideas are starting to circulate regarding what to do with regard to our water polo program.  I hope to have a plan moving forward fairly soon.  Again though, if you know someone interested, available, and qualified to take on the task of coaching, please have them contact me at manager@wwpool.org.

Go!

What’s happening this week at the Double Dub…

From the Manager

Things generally seem to be going very well around the pool, and looking ahead, better weather appears to be right around the corner! AND only two weeks to go until we make the switch to the full summer swim schedule!

Some odds and ends this week…

Pool Calendar

We frequently field questions regarding what the pool schedule is. Those of you wondering might check out this link to the pool calendar as it is the go to spot for what’s happening and will be the most accurate and up to date source of information. Once you get to the page, the calendar may be viewed by week, month, or agenda. and it can be printed out as well.

EMLS

Early Morning Lap Swim started last Monday and will run weekdays for the season,
6-7:30am. I wanted let you know that we will be opening up the building/locker rooms a bit before 6am in an attempt to actually have you be able to hop right in and start swimming at 6. Also, we ask that until school is out, and we make the switch to the full summer schedule, that you are mindful of your time needed to get out, get dressed, and be on your way. We would like to wrap up/lock up no later than 7:45am.  Finally, please remember to sign in!

Aerobics

Aerobics will be back on Monday, June 25th. Here is the schedule:
12:30-1:15pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
8:00-8:45am on Tuesday and Thursday

Guests

Each household has up to 20 guests per season at $5.00/each. After the first 20, additional guests are $7 each. Register all guests at the pool office when you bring them.

Special Guest Categories
  • Care Givers:  Member’s children cared for by a “babysitter” must register their sitter at the office.  No guest fee will be charged for the sitter.  The sitter is allowed to use the pool only when responsible for those children.  Please register sitters at the beginning of each season.
  • Houseguests: Must be from out of town & living at member’s home.  Register at office with beginning and ending dates of stay. One time fee during stay is $5.00/person & count once against the 20 guest limit.
  • Teen Guests:· During full season operations teens can bring up to 2 guests any day after 7pm for $2.50/each, and do not count against the family annual allotment.
Pool Parties

Parties are geared for or a group of 6 to 12 people must be arranged through the managers or head guard in the pool office and are held during regular hours. Cost is $6.00 per guest, and does not count against the family’s 20 guests $5.00 limit.  Reservations must be made IN ADVANCE.  We ask that you limit your party to 2 hours.

Pool Rentals

Ideal for larger groups, rentals may be scheduled on Friday or Saturday PM after regular hours, or Saturday AM before pool opens. Afternoon rentals may also be available while school is in session.  2 hr rental = 1.5 hours in pool with last half hour out of pool.  Costs vary depending on size of group.  Please contact Raab at pool office for more information or to schedule a rental.

BBQ reminder

In doing my rounds one night last week I found a bbq left on.  Please double check that when you are finished that the bbq is OFF. Also, please turn off the tank.

  • Swim Team Overnighter, June 30th – July 1, details to come.

What’s This?
This is our almost vintage pool vacuum. I remember former Wedgwood Manager, Peter Klein buying this thing over 30 years ago. Once a week we still use this thing to help clean up the pool. Additionally, we now have not one, but two robotic “Dolphin” pool cleaners with one of them deployed on a daily basis. It doesn’t take much to mess up the pool, so please, if you could help us by keeping those band-aids, bobby pins, and whatnot out of the pool to begin with it would be much appreciated.

Counting down the days…

Hello June!

And here we are, already June!

The opening couple of weeks were pretty. Darn. Good.

The shift to the early swim team practice is working out better than anticipated and as of today we now have 180 kids signed up! That’s 16 more than last year, and there are over 30 new kids on the team too!
The swim team committee wanted me to remind those that have been trying out swim team that at this time all swimmers attending swim practice must be registered in Team Unify. Any questions? Email: swimteam@wwpool.org
So the big thing that’s happening this week is that Early Morning Lap Swim is starting up. It begins on Monday morning, June 4th, and will run weekdays, 6-7:30am. While this swim has never really been crowded by say, Meadowbrook standards, the extra time will hopefully allow those partaking to have a more enjoyable experience. One thing that can help to better ensure this is if everyone swimming during this time is aware of some pretty common lap lane etiquette.

The basics – Figure out what your speed is relative to the others swimming in your lane. If you are are moving faster than the other swimmers, move into the faster lanes, and if you are going slower than others in your lane, move into a slower lane.

I would suggest circle swimming all of the time as well. We did have a collision last year during EMLS, and if possible, I’d certainly like to avoid this from happening again.

Something to note is that will soon be “labeling”  all of the lanes. We’ve got more signs ordered, so in the very near future all lanes will have a speed designation.

I know that old habits can be hard to break, and some of you have been swimming  in your own lane now for decades. While we’ll try to work the best we can with making accommodations, for the enjoyment and safety of everyone swimming we ask that our lap swimmers adhere to the aforementioned.  Thank you!
See you at the pool, but probably not at 6am…
