And now for Wednesday, August 22nd…

First off I would like to say that I appreciate the positive feedback and support I have received regarding this unprecedented situation. It’s not been fun for any of us for sure… Thank you.

Sadly, Early Morning Lap Swim is again cancelled tomorrow, Wednesday, August 22nd.

A decision on Lessons, Aerobics and Polo will be posted on Facebook and here around 7am tomorrow.

Please check Facebook or back here for another update around noon regarding open swim tomorrow.

Now go out and throw a rock

Update – Pool Closed Today – Mon 8/20

Probably not a big surprise but the pool will be closed today.

This morning after checking the three closest monitoring stations to the pool we went ahead with lessons as the air quality was still in the moderate range. Since that time one of those stations has remained about the same, another is showing deteriorating air quality, and the closest station actually is now offline. This station is now online and air quality has dramatically worsened.

With the¬†forecast¬†for things to possibly, if not likely, get worse over the course of the day, and the staff already feeling the effects of being outside during lessons this¬†morning, I feel it’s the right thing to be doing.

We will continue to monitor things and be making a determination on what the plan will be on Tuesday as soon as possibly feasible.

Stay tuned…

Schedule Update

The current air quality is much improved over yesterday… lesson are on this morning. We will continue to monitor the situation and will be making a decision on any other schedule changes if needed, as needed.

Slip Sliding Away…

From the manager

Things are really starting to wind down and there are now less than two weeks of full summer operations left.  Be sure to get your outside swim fix in while you can! Unfortunately my summer is officially over tomorrow!

The recent smokey weather has definitely been, well, unpleasant to say the least. ¬†The immediate forecast is not looking good for the next couple of days either. Depending on how this plays out, we may be making some modifications to our schedule. My main concern is for the¬†staff, and even as young and healthy as they are, many of them were¬†feeling the effects of the smoke that was around last week after having to work in it for several hours. If the air quality gets back to “Unhealthy” levels, which is more severe than “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups”, expect to see some sort of changes. We’ll start first with updates on our Facebook page but send out¬†email alerts as well.

One thing that is looking more likely is that we will be cancelling Aerobics on Monday and perhaps Tuesday.¬†If you are an Aerobics attendee, we’ll be sending out an email update tomorrow morning to those that signed up for a season pass, as well as posting on our Facebook page. Also, the last day for Aerobics will be Friday, August 24th.

Other things on the horizon…

We will be hosting the SSSL Water Polo Championships on Thursday, August 30th. If you are into water polo this is your chance to see some potentially great matches. This will also likely be the last year we host this event for quite some time. The pool will be closing early at 3:30 on the 30th.

Early Morning Lap Swim will wrap up for the season on Friday, August 31st. Also please note that starting tomorrow, Monday, August 20th, the Roosevelt Women’s Swim Team will be holding practice Monday through Friday, starting at 7:30am. Be prepared for a few more people coming in right about the time this lap swim ends.

And believe it or not, Labor Day is right around the corner. Our¬†annual Biathlon will be at 9:30am with warm-up starting at 9. ¬†The pool will be open from 12-7pm. Games¬†galore will be from 2:30-3:30, and we’ll also have the BeanFish¬†food truck onsite from 2-5:30pm… yum! ¬†

Last thing, we will be locking up the gate to Dahl Field around 8pm for the next couple of weeks, and unlocking it in the mornings after Early Morning Lap Swim.

Singing the back to school blues…

What’s This?

This of course is our suit wringer and many of you probably use it every time you come in and swim. The wringer gets a lot of use, so much so that we typically go through one of these a season!

It’s Watershow Week! ¬†Aug 13th – 19th¬†ūüėć

From the manager

Watershow week is upon us! Practices are well underway and songs are already getting stuck in my head… The big show will this Saturday, August 18th at 8:30pm. Please note that the pool will be closing early both Friday and Saturday at 7pm to¬†accommodate the¬†rehearsal and the show. We are also working on having a food truck on Saturday evening before the show, but as of now nothing is¬†confirmed. We will post updates to our¬†Facebook page if we get it for sure nailed down.

The remainder¬†of the season schedule has been posted on the pool Google calendar. ¬†It’s looking like a major staffing squeeze to pull it all off. My fingers are crossed!

Sunday morning laps from 11-noon continues to be well attended. ¬†One¬†change we will be making moving forward is that we will no longer be putting in the third lap lane on Sunday’s¬†from noon-1pm.

The basketball hoop remains out of commission. Parts have been ordered and I anticipate it being back together and ready to go on Tuesday.

Thank you for not bringing glass and/or alcohol to the pool this past week!

Please remember that double diaper!

Here’s what’s happening: Aug 6th -12th¬†ūüėÄ

From the manager

You may have noticed the signage that’s recently been posted around the pool…

It’s time for me to touch base on what has become a very pervasive problem and that being non-compliance with our DRY POOL POLICY. ¬†As manager of the club I am tasked with enforcing club policies and procedures and unfortunately people bringing in alcohol has grown exponentially of late.

Now It should not be a surprise that we have this policy. Pool use and consumption of alcohol aren’t a good idea, and long ago the decision was made that alcohol would not be permitted¬†on Wedgwood property. The only time that alcohol is allowed at the club is¬†for the adult parties sponsored by the Wedgwood Pool Board. My personal opinion on this is that this sends a mixed message that it’s okay for people to just bring in a little bit to enjoy now and then. PLEASE DO NOT!

We again ask for your cooperation in complying with this policy and your consideration in not putting our very underage staff in the awkward position to dealing with this. If you do bring in unacceptable items the staff will be asking you to remove them from the pool area immediately.

And alcohol aside, glass is not permitted at the pool either.  No-brainer, right?!

Oh, and vaping! Sorry, we don’t allow this on the pool grounds either…¬†

Watershow

Currently there are only 27 kids signed up… we need more!¬†The Watershow is a super fun experience where kids ages 3-18 get to learn a skit/dance on land and in water and perform it with fun costumes! They will get put in a group of kids around their age and practice a few times leading up to the show.¬†The show is on¬†August 18th at 8:30pm¬†and we will also have a¬†dress rehearsal on¬†August 17th at 7pm.¬†Once we put together groups, each instructor will send out an email with practice times for the week and a half leading up to the show, but no worries if your kiddos can’t make all of the practice times. We just want them to have a good time! The sign up sheet is on the window right outside of the office so come¬†sign up THIS WEEK!¬†This year‚Äôs theme is¬†MUSCIALS!

Swim Team
Pictures and duffle bags are here at the pool. Please pick them up on your next visit.

What’s this?

Back in the day, as they say, the water level of the pool was maintained by a mechanical device that resembled an oversize float and valve much like you used to find in the topside of a toilet. That mechanism would on occasion fail, typically a couple of times a summer.

Now at some point along the way someone built a better mousetrap if you will, and this is what we now use to control the water level in the pool. This little¬†device uses electricity to both sense and control the pool level. It’s much more reliable than our old mechanism and in the last 15 years or so the only maintenance needed has been one¬†probe replacement.

The way this unit works is that a valve is connected to the device on one side, and a probe on the other. The probe is set at where the water level of the pool should be. The probe has two electrical contacts and when the contacts are both submerged the circuit is closed and the valve remains closed. When the water level drops, and the probes are no longer submerged, the circuit opens and the unit then opens a refill valve.  Water keeps flowing until the water level raises to the point where the contacts are both in the water again and the circuit closes.

What’s Happening at the Double Dub…

From the Manager

My oh my time does fly. Here it is almost August…¬†

Yesterday was the busiest day of the season, which is not surprising to those of you that were here at the pool. Now only 15% of our membership actually signed in, but with all the guests in tow the actual number of people here was, well, plenty. ¬†There was a run on both lounge chairs and umbrellas and it seems like we’ll never have enough of either. More are already on the way though.

This week marks the beginning of the later half of the season. Dual meets are done and now as we slide into the championship season a reminder that we don’t host any of these big end of the season meets, which is pretty unusual. ¬†Both Water Polo and the Watershow are starting to ramp up. and information on both of those can be found below.

Early morning lap swim is now all 6 lanes, 6-7:30am, enjoy!

Now I did receive several suggestions regarding my request for ideas about how to enhance our security. Besides checking things in at the office, the number one idea people shared is to get one of these.

What’s this?

With our current boiler system the water we use to heat the pool runs through a large heat exchanger at 180 degrees. this same water also runs through another smaller heat exchanger to heat the water for our showers as well. The result is that our domestic hot water is initially very hot, way too hot to safely use, so it needs to be tempered. This is our tempering valve. This device allows adjustment of the domestic water temperature and has a range of about 90-105 degrees.

Typically our showers are about 98 degrees but when the weather is really hot and we are trying to keep the pool comfortable we shut the boiler off, because the systems are connected the showers may also be a bit chilly.

Now I’ve had questions as to why the outdoor shower is warmer than our indoor ones. My theory is that because the outdoor shower line, which is uninsulated, runs along the ceiling in the boiler room, and the boiler room is often upwards of 120 degrees, what you are experiencing is the transfer of heat from that room to that pipe. Now it’s only about a 20 foot run, so that shower shouldn’t¬†be much warmer for long. Conversely, the indoor showers are much further away from the boiler room and instead of gaining heat like the one in the boiler room, these pipe runs start to lose heat as soon as the water leaves the storage tank. And if this water sits for any length of time, well these showers will take a while to heat up, especially if you are the early¬†morning¬†lapper and the first one to turn one on.
