Weekend Update…¬†ūüėé…and a Request

It looks like we have a fantastic weekend ahead and things should certainly be hopping at the pool.  We have the Cake Bake as well as a Fun Float happening on Saturday night and while I anticipate this being a very well attended event, I believe that this Sunday is shaping up to likely be the busiest day of this 2018 season. In anticipation, I have already scheduled some extra guard coverage, and at this time, we are not putting any more parties on the calendar. Be prepared if you come mid to late in the day as an empty lounge chair or an umbrella will likely be hard to find.

Typically, about once every other season or so, things line up perfectly to create a situation where we experience extremely high pool usage. To help ensure the pool remains a pleasant place for our membership we are asking that this weekend, especially on Sunday, to please limit the number of guests that you bring. Bring them in early between 12-3, or think about bringing them on another day altogether.

I don’t think most people realize when they are bringing in one or two guests with them that it’s really that big of an impact, but when every other member also using the facility is bringing in that same one or two guests it starts to add up.

Thank you for being mindful of this request, and see you at the pool!

What’s Happening July 9th – 15th…

Yippie! Summer has arrived!

We’re back to a more “normal” summer week at the pool. ¬†We do have our first away meet at Blue Ridge on Tuesday, so those of you that like a nearly empty pool to swim in, take note. ¬†You might also want to make a note that on¬†Thursday we host another home meet so the pool will be closing early on¬†that afternoon at 4pm. We are still¬†looking for volunteers for that meet.¬†¬†Sign up to help in the lobby at the pool, and/or¬†on¬†team unify if you¬†have swimmer on the team.

Our first Sunday morning laps was well attended. While we are still trying to work out the details as to when and¬†how to switch from the 6 lane format back to 3. What I do know is that we will have 6 lanes from 11am-noon, and then¬†3 lanes from noon-1pm. It’s how we set¬†those three lanes up at noon that we are still ironing out as there’s both¬†pros and cons to leaving them in place, in the east-west 25 yard¬†configuration,¬†or moving them¬†into¬†north-south 25 meter set up.¬†We’ll get it ironed out and see how it goes this coming Sunday.

There’s still time¬†to join the WW Adult Team!¬†¬†Workouts – 8-9pm Monday and Wednesday.¬†Note that during this workout time¬†our general swim¬†lap lane¬†configuration¬†will not be available.

The annual Cake Bake is coming up this coming Saturday! The Cake Bake is an annual tradition at Wedgwood.  Once a year children, families, or friends bake and decorate cakes according to a theme.  It is a tasty way to express your creativity and pretend you work on for the Food Network. After the judging, cake and ice cream is served by the staff.
Theme: SEASONS
Schedule: Cakes should arrive by 6:30pm, viewing from 7-7:30, judging around 7:30 and then serving them up after that until they are gone.

There will also be a fun float from 7-9:30pm on Saturday as well. There will not be lap lanes during this time.

Enjoy the weather and enjoy the pool!  Just please take a GOOD shower before getting in! Thanks!

What’s this?

This is the underside of the hand dryer that’s currently not working in the womens’ locker room. Not a big surprise that the motor has gone out in this unit given that it was installed in 1992. A¬†replacement motor was difficult to find but¬†has¬†been ordered. My hope is to have it back up and running¬†next weekend.

With the holiday coming up in the middle of the week, and no swim meets, this week has the promise of well earned respite.  The pool schedule will remain otherwise normal with exception of July 4th. Details are listed below.

For our lap swimmers we will be adding an Adult Lap Swim on Sunday mornings starting this coming Sunday, July 8th. The swim will run from 11am РNoon, and 6 lanes will be available

I’m¬†heading¬†north but y’all have¬†a happy fourth!

What’s this?

This is our Chemtrol!¬†This little thing helps keep our chemicals in check by monitoring the water 24/7 and automatically making¬†adjustments¬†to keep¬†both the chlorine and ph in the pool within their proper parameters. Now we still check both it and the water hourly while the pool is open as it’s not always 100% reliable, but it certainly does make the job much easier than it used to be.¬†We’ve had some version of this unit for over 20 years now and I¬†believe this is our 4th one, which was installed prior to last season.

What’s Happening – June 25th – July 1st¬†ūüėé

From the Manager

Ready, Set…¬†Full summer ops are finally here! And it¬†is a very¬†busy week to kick things off. On top of¬†everything that normally goes on we also¬†have not one, but two home meets, so the pool will¬†be closing at 4pm on both Tuesday and Thursday. It’s also team picture day on Tuesday, the¬†schedule for that is below.¬†Swim team tie dye¬†activity is taking place on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. And to¬†cap it all off the swim team overnighter on will be Saturday night (registration form here).

Just a reminder to the early morning lap swimmers that starting tomorrow lanes 1 and 2 may be utilized for swim team practice starting at 7am. Also keep in mind that the locker rooms will likely be much more crowded now as you exit this swim.

Some ideas are starting to circulate regarding what to do with regard to our water polo program.  I hope to have a plan moving forward fairly soon.  Again though, if you know someone interested, available, and qualified to take on the task of coaching, please have them contact me at manager@wwpool.org.

Go!

Hello June!

And here we are, already June!

The opening couple of weeks were pretty. Darn. Good.

The shift to the early swim team practice is working out¬†better than¬†anticipated and as of today we now¬†have 180 kids signed up! That’s 16 more than last year,¬†and there are over 30 new kids on the team too!
The swim team committee wanted me to remind those that have been trying out swim team that at this time all swimmers attending swim practice must be registered in Team Unify. Any questions? Email: swimteam@wwpool.org
So the¬†big thing that’s happening this week is that Early Morning Lap Swim is starting up. It begins on Monday morning, June 4th, and will run¬†weekdays, 6-7:30am. While this swim has never really been crowded by say, Meadowbrook¬†standards, the extra time will hopefully allow those partaking to have a¬†more enjoyable experience. One thing that can help to better ensure this¬†is if everyone swimming during this time is aware of some pretty common lap lane etiquette.

The basics –¬†Figure out what your speed is relative to the¬†others swimming in your lane. If you are are moving faster than the other swimmers,¬†move into the faster lanes, and if you are going slower than others in your lane,¬†move into a slower lane.

I¬†would suggest circle swimming all of the time as well. We did have a collision last year during EMLS, and if possible, I’d certainly like to avoid this from happening again.

Something to note is that will soon be “labeling” ¬†all of the lanes. We’ve got more signs¬†ordered, so in¬†the very near future all lanes will have a speed¬†designation.

I know that old habits can be¬†hard to break, and some of you have been swimming ¬†in your own lane now for decades. While we’ll try to work the best we can with making accommodations, for the enjoyment and safety of everyone swimming we ask that our lap swimmers adhere to the aforementioned. ¬†Thank you!
See you at the pool, but probably not at 6am…

–Raab

Ready, Set, Go!
The long wait is over, it’s opening weekend at the pool! I’m extremely pleased that things have come together with pre-season preparations, but as usual,¬†we are still busily wrapping things up so that everything will¬†be ready to roll starting at noon this¬†Saturday.¬†

Now getting the club ready for another summer involves many people, doing many different jobs, both big and small. I would like to say thank you to all that attended the work party on May 5th!  Your efforts really helped make a big difference.

I would also¬†like to give a big shout out¬†to one individual in particular¬†and that would be¬†Jeff Haven,¬†our board¬†Maintenance Chair. Jeff is a get it done kind of guy, and that’s just what he’s been doing¬†this off-season. He¬†spearheaded the womens’ locker room¬†re-do, as well as¬†the more minor mens’ locker room tweaks. Additionally, he took on the task of seeing that¬†the¬†expansion joints surrounding around the pool deck were overhauled. To top it off,¬†just yesterday he was busily sanding and staining. So if the place looks a little better than you remember, it’s in large part to Jeff’s seemingly endless amounts of energy.

We also undertook some work that while perhaps less noticeable was quite important. Now I know I will probably be jinxing things here, but I do believe we were able to finally get our leaky old pool sealed up, as after refilling it just a couple of weeks ago, and monitoring the water meter for 10 days, the meter had not changed!

It’s nice to start things with good news for sure!

As we get underway this season there are many things to remind everyone about, and I also¬†have to remind myself that after doing this for so many years, that there are¬†members just¬†joining the pool this summer, and¬†for them this may¬†be the first bit of information they will¬†be¬†receiving. So while¬†some of this may be a repeat, it’s information worth repeating¬†for all of our members, both new and old,¬†I¬†really appreciate you¬†familiarizing¬†yourselves¬†with the¬†pool rules as well as the¬†guest policy. While they haven’t changed,¬†they are¬†important for all to know and worth a revisit. ¬†These will¬†also be posted at the club in the lobby.

Now many of you may also recall last season we implemented the very successful Double Down Diaper Policy.  We will continue to double down this season and want to remind those whom this policy pertains to, to also become familiar with it as well.

With the bottom end of things covered, we¬†want to also emphasize,¬†especially with little ones, that sometimes things also come up, literally speaking.¬†If you notice your¬†child either¬†swallowing or inhaling a good deal of water, often indicated by immediate and uncontrolled coughing, please get¬†them out¬†of the pool ASAP. Most of the time the coughing will pass and will go away¬†as fast as it starts, but¬†sometimes¬†the coughing can be¬†a little more severe and may¬†lead¬†to vomiting, which¬†isn’t fun for anyone.

Thank you in advance for your help with reviewing our rules and policies!
When coming to the pool during general¬†swim, or for lap swim,¬†please remember to sign in on the computer.¬†I’ve tried to get everyone’s information into and updated in the system. If there is a problem, and for a few of you there certainly will be, it¬†can usually be remedied¬†pretty quickly. There is a¬†form at the front desk for that, and/or please leave me a message in the staff message book.¬†

Remember to check all guests in upon your arrival. Please also remember that opening weekend is for members only and that we will not be scheduling parties to occur during the first week of operations.

I would also like to remind you that you are always welcome to check your wallets, purses, keys, phones, etc. in at the pool office. ¬†As far as swim bags and such, many people feel more¬†comfortable taking them out on the deck instead of leaving them in the locker room. ¬†Really it’s about whatever works for you and your comfort level. ¬†

You may also choose to bring a lock with you for the lockers as well, but we ask that you take that lock home with you when you leave for the day.  Now there are occasions when leaving a lock on a locker is permitted, but those instances should be cleared with the pool management in advance.

In case you hadn’t heard…

Wedgwood Swim Pool has always been a strong community. As managers, our job is to make decisions to best meet the needs of all those who enjoy Wedgwood pool.  As the community changes, we must be prepared to adjust the operations of the pool.  Over the past several years, we have identified new needs for lap swimmers, water aerobics participants, swim team members, and community members participating in the lesson program.  While we have been able to make minor adjustments to better accommodate certain groups, we felt the time had come to make more significant changes to pool schedules to better meet the needs of the Wedgwood community.

After consulting with the swim coaches, lesson coordinator and the board we have developed a New Schedule for Swim Team Practice.  The new schedule has taken into account feedback from families over the past few years, as well as addressing issues identified by the coaching staff.  We believe the changes will better support the growth and development of the Wedgwood swimmers.

Early Season Evening Practices:
6-6:30PM = 8 years and under
6:30-7:10PM = 9-10 year olds
7:10-8:00PM = 11-12 year olds
8:00-9:00PM = 13 years & Up
Summer Morning Practices:
7:00-7:30AM = 15 & up (lanes 1 & 2 practice for swimmers who have jobs)
7:30-9:00AM = 13 years & Up
9:00-9:30AM = 8 years and under
9:30-10:15AM = 9-10 year olds
10:15-11:00AM = 11-12 year olds

In addition to these changes in practice times there have also been changes to our general pool hours, early morning lap swim, and the lesson program.  These adjustments reflect the changing needs of our community, as well as the availability of pool space. As many of you probably figured out with the Early Season Practice Schedule starting at 6pm, the pool will now be closing at 6pm, Monday РThursdays until the switch to the full summer schedule.

The very popular 2:30-3:30pm Afternoon Adult Lap Swim returns, and will start on Monday, May 21st. This swim will run weekdays until June 22nd.

Early Morning Lap Swim will being on Monday, June 4th and run all season from 6am-7:30am Monday-Friday.  Please note that once school is out for the summer, and the swim team moves to morning practices, two of the lanes will be designated for swim team practice for the last 30 minutes of this time.

Once school is out for the summer, swimming¬†lessons will start a little earlier in the day, and then run a little longer. They will¬†now¬†run from 9:15am until 12:30pm.¬†We’ve also created,¬†combined, and retooled some our lesson groupings to help us better meet the needs of our swimmers varying skill levels. ¬†And heads up, member¬†registration for Session 1 will be on Wednesday, May 30th 6-7pm.

Now the domino effect of these practice and lesson changes will push out the start time for Aerobics on Monday, Wednesdays and Friday to 12:30pm, Aerobics is scheduled to start on Monday, June 25th.

Finally, the pool will be opening on weekdays at 1:15pm once summer is in full swing, also the 25th of June.

Please keep in¬†mind that as the season progresses we’ll be monitoring¬†and making adjustments as¬†warranted. ¬†For the¬†most up to date details on any¬†and all schedule information please¬†check the club website/calendar.

I’m know that I’m¬†really looking forward the upcoming season. The familiar sounds of the water running in the gutters and¬†that faint¬†scent¬†of chlorine¬†that I have known now for three decades have returned… it’s almost New Year’s¬†Day in May!

See you at the pool!

LANDSCAPE:

POOL LANDSCAPE PARTY
This year our annual landscape event will be held on Saturday May 5 from 10am to 4pm. The time commitment is 3 hours per family.

A few changes this year:

  1. The big landscape projects are done.  We have weeding, raking, and sweeping to be done Рnot glamorous, but necessary. Please bring buckets, weeding tools, rakes etc.
  2. Very Important, Check-in time will be from 10am to 1pm ONLY. I know scheduling for families is difficult, last year many folks came at the end of the day and there was nothing to do. I don’t want to waste your day. As a result, sign-in cutoff will be1pm.
  3. This plan is a firm at this time-but if needs dictate and we are able to schedule another landscape party you will be notified via the WW Pool Newsletter. So please keep current on emails from the pool, and spread the word about landscape party.

Pool Manager:

Wedgwood Swim Pool has always been a strong community. As managers, our job is to make decisions to best meet the needs of all those who enjoy Wedgwood pool.  As the community changes, we must be prepared to adjust the operations of the pool.  Over the past several years, we have identified new needs for lap swimmers, water aerobics participants, swim team members, and community members participating in the lesson program.  While we have been able to make minor adjustments to better accommodate certain groups, we feel the time has come to make more significant changes to pool schedules to better meet the needs of the Wedgwood community.

After consulting with the swim coaches, lesson coordinator and the board we have developed a New Schedule for Swim Team Practice.  The new schedule has taken into account feedback from families over the past few years, as well as addressing issues identified by the coaching staff.  We believe the changes will better support the growth and development of the Wedgwood swimmers.

Early Season Evening Practices:
6-6:30PM = 8 years and under
6:30-7:10PM = 9-10 year olds
7:10-8:00PM = 11-12 year olds
8:00-9:00PM = 13 years & Up
Summer Morning Practices:
7:00-7:30AM = 15 & up (lanes 1 & 2 practice for swimmers who have jobs)
7:30-9:00AM = 13 years & Up
9:00-9:30AM = 8 years and under
9:30-10:15AM = 9-10 year olds
10:15-11:00AM = 11-12 year olds

We will also be making changes to lap swim and the lesson program which will be announced in the coming weeks.  These adjustments also reflect the changing needs of our community.  We realize that any change has an impact on your summer. And we wanted to share this information as soon as it was available.

We look forward to sunnier days and seeing you all back at Wedgwood Swim Pool for summer 2018!

Raab Parker
Manager

Best. Summer. Ever.

That headline pretty much sums it up, and the forecast for the next several days is certainly looking amazing.

The last day of operations this season will be Sunday, September 10th. Now that’s a week earlier than usual, and that is because of necessary repairs to the pool liner and expansion joint, which runs down the center of the pool. For this work to be successfully completed, the weather needs to be both dry, and above 50 degrees for about 10 straight days. Originally these repairs were scheduled in April, but, you may recall, it was neither dry, nor very warm during that time. Fingers crossed!

Remember that between now and that last day, pool hours will gradually start to be reduced, so please check the schedule below to make sure the pool is open prior to coming down.

Now typically the back to school week can bring some of the heaviest pool usage when the weather is anywhere near decent. With the hot weather in the forecast and limited pool hours next week we anticipate some very busy days on the horizon. At this point I want to put it out there and ask that if things do pan out weather-wise, that you please limit your guest usage, as at this point we have just enough staffing to get to the end, but once school starts, bringing in extra staff can really become a challenge.

Again, as in past years, we will also not be scheduling any parties for the last week of the season.

Finally, the last weekend will be for pool members only.

Thank you!

Don’t forget the early pool closure, 3:45pm this Thursday for the SSSL Water Polo Championships.

That’s it! ¬†Enjoy the last few days around the pool. Have a wonderful off-season and I will see you next May if not before!

Mid-Week Update

Hello –

I wanted to send out a mid-week update as things are really shaping up to be a bit on the extreme side weatherwise these next couple of days.

At this time the boiler has been completely shut off to help keep the pool as comfortable as possible. This means the water will likely be a¬†little cooler in the¬†morning but hopefully remain refreshing in the late afternoon and evening. Now it’s not uncommon for the pool temp to¬†increase¬†5-6 degrees, or even more during this type of weather. Turning the boiler completely off, rather than down, has proven to be the most effective method of keeping the pool water cooler and avoiding the later day bathtub effect.

Now because the boiler is turned off, the showers well, will be a tad bit more¬†refreshing these next few days as well. ¬†It’s a bit complicated, but to heat our showers there is a small heat exchanger off of the boiler, the boiler that¬†also heats the pool. t’s a great design most of the time, except when the weather gets really warm. If the boiler were to remain on there’s¬†enough¬†residual heat still remaining from heating the showers that it becomes very difficult, if not impossible, to prevent the pool from¬†continued heating, which during this weather is not so good.

So that’s the story with the pool and shower temps. ¬†I also wanted to send out a reminder that tonight (Wednesday) the pool will be closing early at 5pm for the swim team dinner, awards and movie.

In the time since the last news blast went out on Sunday I have also been asked several times about whether or not there will be any sort of limitations on guests during this hot spell. At this time I don’t have a definitive answer, but my gut tells me we won’t likely need to do that. Still, probably not the best time to bring the whole neighborhood down for a swim though. What I can say definitively is¬†that the pool will be open extended hours on both Thursday and Friday until 10pm!

Stay Cool!
