Coming to a close…

Just like that we’ve come to the end of the season.

From here on out, as the pool staff starts back up at school we will be working with a skeleton staff pieced together to cover the pool hours that we have scheduled. The good news is we have more college kids still around this season than we’ve had in a very long time so we’re able to schedule out pool hours that in the past we’ve had problems covering. The bad news is that despite this it’s still going to be a stretch. So what this means is that from here on out we will not be scheduling any parties. Then starting Monday, September 12th, we are also asking that the last week of operations be members only, meaning no guests.

Now the pool will remain open, albeit on reduced hours, until and including closing day, which by the way is Sunday, September 18th. So while there is a bit more time to get a in a little more swimming, you better get in soon!

Still hoping for a little more fun in the sun…

Poop Policy Update

Sadly I have to share the news that we had another incident of poop in the pool at closing last night. During the past month now we have not gone more than five days without a reoccurrence. The shear number of instances of this happening has become way too common.

Prevention is better for all of us and as such we are implementing new strategies in an effort to quickly reduce this situation both for general operations and for health reasons.

You will immediately notice some new signage at the pool and if you have a little ones you will also notice our staff being more proactive with reminders about proper pool diapering as well as taking bathroom breaks, diaper checks. Additionally we are implementing a double swim diaper policy.

Double Swim Diaper Policy

  • Every child who is not completely potty trained must wear a snug fitting non-disposable swim diaper or rubber pants over their disposable swim diapers.

  • Make sure the your child visits the bathroom before getting into the pool, even if they just went at home.

  • Take your child to the bathroom after being in or around the pool for 30 minutes.

  • If you observe your child exhibiting their “I’ve got to go potty behaviors” please take them out of the pool and to the bathroom.

  • If your child has not been feeling well, has a tummy ache or not been regular please do not use the pool.

As both a pool manger and a parent, I do know from personal experience that despite one’s best efforts, there unfortunately will still be times when this will happen in a swimming pool.  I am hoping that with the added awareness and emphasis, along with your help, we can at least reduce or eliminate this issue moving forward.

Goodbye Summer?

Well that was certainly abrupt!  Down but not out? Hopefully there’s a little summer left this summer.

This Thursday Wedgwood will be hosting the SSSL Water Polo Championships. Please note that the pool will indeed be closing at 3:30pm and the north end of the pool will also not be open after 3:30pm.

Labor Day is right around the corner and with Labor Day comes the annual biathlon as well as the beloved Labor Day Games! The biathlon will start at 9:30am with a warm-up starting at 9:15.  Please sign yourself up prior to showing up so we have an idea if anyone is actually planning on coming.  There is a sign up sheet posted in the pool lobby.

The games on Labor Day will commence at 2pm and should run for about an hour after which we may run more games as well. Please note the lap lanes will most likely be open during the games.

The last day for morning lap swim this season will be this Friday, Sept 2nd.

The lost and found that has been found since the middle of July is in the lobby and ready to be claimed.  Please check for lost items prior to Sunday as after that what’s left will be donated to the Goodwill.

Hoping for a little more fun in the sun…

August
The forecast ahead looks like it’s going to be down right hot by the end of this week. Good news, and there aren’t any early pool closures on the calendar, in fact, the pool is scheduled to stay open until 10pm on Saturday night!  We’ll also likely be open a bit later on Friday too but we’ll make that call later this week and will post updates on Facebook and at the pool.

There’s an upper deck adult party on Saturday which starts at 7pm.  Rumor has it there will be live jazz as well.  Come check it out and the kids can enjoy fun floating in the pool also starting at 7pm.  Please note there will not be lap lanes open during this time.

The following week on Tuesday, August 23rd, our senior members will be having a dessert potluck starting at 7pm. Seniors, more information will be coming in a separate email.

Watershow – Saturday, August 27th starting around 8:30pm.  Put it down on your calendar now as it’s something you don’t want to miss.

wedgewood swim poo
No that’s not a typo…  I was reconciling my credit card statement this weekend and noticed a couple of charges to the aforementioned Wedgewood Swim Poo.  Yes, POO.

Now it seems like we’ve had an unusually number of these incidents this summer and one could reason that any number other than zero is too high.  Currently we are at 4 for this season.  Compare that to last summer with one, 4 does seem excessive, but when compared to they typical amount which is 5, sadly we are right on track.

The use of snug fitting swim diapers for all children who are not potty trained or who have just newly achieved potty training is not an option.  Keep in mind while we do keep a few swim diapers in various sizes in the pool office, we recommend though that you plan in advance as we may not have the appropriate size on hand.

The CDC also recommends bathroom breaks and checking or changing the diaper, out of the water, not in the pool or next to the pool, every 30 minutes. Also, individuals that have or recently had diarrhea should not use the pool whatsoever!  Your compliance with this is necessary and important for the enjoyment of all others using this facility.

Even despite the best intentions, intervention, and efforts, it’s still going to happen.  Keep in mind that the health department guidelines for facility closure after contamination vary depending on the type of contamination and the chlorine levels when it does.  It could be anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours.  So please, please, please, diaper up, check often and take bathroom breaks!

On a related note, please don’t pee in the outdoor shower.

a note about pool temp
It’s a bit of a balancing act to get 200,000 gallons of water where it feels good.  84 degrees is the normal operating temp of the pool.  It’s that happy medium where most activities can take place without being too cold nor too warm.  When the weather gets hot though it’s much more difficult to keep the water comfortable.  On hot days where the air temp will be in the mid 80+ range we a shoot for somewhere right around 80 to 81 degrees as the starting pool temp for the day.  So for the early morning lap swimmer not moving too fast they may indeed feel a little bit of a chill but by the mid to late afternoon the pool temp will actually come up and be somewhere between 84-86.  Again, that ideal is 84, and if we were to start the day at 84 the temp later in the day can push into the upper 80’s which is not really that pleasant nor refreshing for anyone.

early morning lap swim
Sleep in a little longer, morning lap swim now runs until 7:30am on weekday mornings. Please note, the last day for morning lap swim will be Friday, Sept 2nd.

water polo
Planning ahead, Wedgwood will host the SSSL Water Polo Championship on Thursday, September 1st. The pool will be closing at 3:30pm that day as the matches will get underway at 4pm. The north end of the pool will not be open for any swimming during this time. It’s August!

If this past weekend is any indication, this August, unlike last year, will likely be slower, quieter, more typical.  If you enjoy sunny days and an uncrowded pool, you will love this month here at WW!  Come get as much summer in as you possibly can because after it’s gone it’s gone and it will be a whole long time before summer comes back.

Even with the season starting to wind down there are still some things going on this month.  Water Polo starts this week and there’s the Watershow as well. Read on to find out more.

Good luck to our swimmers at All Cities and congratulations on their 3rd place showing at the Northern Division meet last Thursday!

early morning lap swim
Sleep in a little longer, morning lap swim will run from 6-7:30am M-F starting this Wednesday.

adult team
The adult team had a very successful meet this past weekend, coming in first place! It’s been quite a streak for this team now and that’s largely been in part to the superb leadership and coaching of Karin and Mary. Changes are in the works though for next year as our beloved coaches have decided that after 18 years at the helm they are ready to step down and pass on the torch. A big thank you to both of them for all that they’ve done to make our adult team so successful.  You will be dearly missed.

I have tried to link to the meet results here.

Water polo gets underway this week.  Click here for more information.

watershow
The Watershow will be on Saturday, August 27th. A sign-up sheet is now posted in the pool lobby. Practices will begin on or around August 16th.  Sign up and your instructor will be in touch.  If you’re new to the club, the Watershow is a an evening of various age groups performing semi-syncronized routines set to music both in and out of the water.  It’s a whole lot of fun and has been a club tradition since the earliest years of the club.

aerobics
Aerobics will continue a couple more weeks this season but only on Mon, Wed, Fri from 12-12:45, through August 26th.

cleat exchange
It’s August and many of our swimmers will be switching it up from swimming to soccer. We’re trying put together another cleat exchange at the pool so bring in an old pair of cleats and perhaps pick up a pair.  Cleats can be both put and found under bench in the lobby as you come in the front door of the club.

Please note we will be setting up some of the lap lanes prior to the meet but will leave a couple of them out as well this time around too.  We’ll also be closing a bit earlier at 3:50 as we have a little bit of extra set up and prep for the senior festivities.  Warm-up at 4:50, senior thing at 5:50, meet start 6pm.

Bag?
If you have not ordered your swim team duffel bag yet, today. Monday, July 18th is your last day to do so.  As of 10:15am this morning we only have 4 on order.

Party time!
It’s been a long time coming but this Saturday will be our first adult party of the season.  The event will get under way at 7pm on the upper deck.  Come by for a micro-brew and some munchies while at the same time we’ll be having an anything goes event in the pool for the kids along with an ice cream bar.  The weather looks pretty promising too… finally!  Please note the lap lanes will not be in after 7pm during this event.

See you at the pool!
