Opening Day – Saturday, May 21st

Ready or not it’s finally time to kick the 2016 season off! We would like to welcome you to, or welcome you back to this little urban slice of paradise.

The WW Pool Board would like to extend a special greeting to everyone joining the club this year. Wedgwood is a community, and our goal is to keep everyone safe and keep the pool fun. In order to keep our community connected, Wedgwood needs member involvement. We need members to participate in work parties, volunteer for the Board, help with the swim team, keep the pool clean, and keep a positive attitude. Volunteering is also an opportunity to meet new people. This community has given me some great friends over the last 30 years.  I’m looking forward to getting to know you, too.

Let’s make the 2016 Swim Season another wonderful summer at Wedgwood!  We want everyone’s experience at Wedgwood to be positive and rewarding.  If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions regarding Wedgwood, please feel free to contact me or any other Board member. All Board members (and their phone numbers) are located in the pool directory.

Lyndsey Stewart
2015-2016 Board President

  2. Guest fees prepaid and not used will carry over the following season. They will however count toward the current season’s 20 swims.
  3. Member families past the 20 visit limit will pay $7 a visit per guest.
  4. House guests and boarders count once against the guest limit and are able to use the pool after that without charge. They need not be accompanied by a member. These cases must be registered in the office. House guests with a local regular residence must be cleared by the board.
  5. Birthday parties/group gatherings should be arranged through the manager/assistant manager. These larger groups are discouraged during the weekends. The charge is $6 per swimmer. These swimmers do not count against the limit. Party limit is 12 swimmers.
  6. Non members “sneaking in” will not be allowed to enter for the remainder of the summer. Any member judged to be an accomplice in such a situation will be suspended for a period of time determined by the manager.
  7. Baby-sitters can register in the office. They will be allowed in without fee while accompanying the member children.
  8. Non members baby-sat by a member are treated as any other guest.
  9. Members are responsible to help their guests learn and follow all the club and pool rules.

PARTIES AND RENTALS

Parties for groups of up to twelve people can usually be held during regular pool hours. Parties must be pre-arranged with the office. We schedule only one party at a time and for a two hour block of time. Parties are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. The cost is $6 per person, and these do not count against the 20 guest count. If prior arrangements are not made, or the party runs longer than the two hour block, partygoers may be counted as regular pool guests.

The pool is also available for rent when not regularly open. We can accommodate groups up to 75 people. Rates, times and availability vary. Contact the office if you are interested in finding out more.

BARBECUES, TABLES AND CHAIRS

The barbecues, tables and chairs are available for ALL to use on a first come, first serve basis.

The last hurrah!

teacher strike and pool hours this week…

As most of you are aware there is high chance of a strike by teachers in Seattle Public Schools.  I wanted to let you know that if indeed there is a strike, I will have a few more staff available than previously anticipated and as such I will be modifying the pool hours a bit.

Previously published pool hours will remain unchanged for tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept 8th.  The remaining weekday pool hours from Wed – Fri will roll back to opening at 1pm instead of 3:30 each day of the strike.

If there is no settlement into and over the weekend, the pool hours will also change a tad as well.  Hours would extend to 12-7pm on both of those days. However if school were set to start on Monday the 14th, then Sunday the 13th would be the last day of the season and the hours would revert back to the originally scheduled, 12-5pm.

Looking into next week things start to get a little bit more complicated but I’m working on adding some hours then as well.  I will be posting an update regarding this most likely on Sunday but I know we’re all hopeful a settlement can be reached prior to that.

One thing that will not be changing is that we’re still going to go with the no party thing for the remainder of this season and this coming weekend will still be members only weekend as well.

Check your email or the club Facebook Page for updates.

Enjoy it for now,

Raab

September Swimming…

While no one can deny that this summer was indeed fabulous, it has certainly come to an abrupt end.  Now the swim season will linger just a bit longer but as the weather has shifted, so too will the pool hours next week as we start winding down for the season.  However before we jump to next week…

This Thursday the pool will be closing at 4pm for the SSSL Water Polo Championships which will run from 4:30-9pm.

The lost and found will be leaving on Friday.  So now is the time to check it!

From 7-9pm this coming Saturday we will have Adult Party 2.1 – Come hang out on the upper deck, enjoy a beverage and share your storm stories.  We’ll also have the last Anything Goes of the season going on at the same time too.

Then on Monday, Labor Day, the annual biathlon will start at 9:30am with warm-up beginning at 9.  Games will run between about 2:30-3:30.

Now I’ve been asked many times over the last month when the last day of the season will be and in all likelihood it’s going to be Sept 13th.

A heads up too, we won’t be scheduling any parties after this coming Sunday, and that last weekend the pool is open will be limited to members only.

Going, going, but not yet gone,

– Raab

going, going…

all cities
In a word, fantastic!  The All City meet exceeded all expectations, and the months of anticipation an planning came together perfectly.  I want to extend a HUGE thank you to all that stepped up and played a role in making it so successful!  We could not have done it without you!

winding down and…
It’s inevitable and it’s begun.  There’s a chill in the morning air and the days are growing shorter. Some of the staff have already started to head back to school, and before long September will be here.  With our anticipated season end date, Sunday, September 13th, there is plenty of swimming left to be done although slowly over the next several weeks the shift to shorter season operations will occur.  Aerobics starts to wind down this week, ending next.  The week after that EMLS will end, as will both teen and family swims.  So pay attention to the calendar as things are a changing.

While some things will be starting to wind down we also have a few things that only happen this time of year. The first of course is the Watershow this Saturday, August 22nd at dusk, which just happens to be at 8:42pm on Saturday.

We also have:

Finally, Saturday, August 29th – Adult Party 2.0, 7-10pm and Almost Anything Goes 7-9:30pm.

water usage update
It’s not surprising that at this point we’ve already surpassed the total number of swims from last season and we still have a little more than a month to go.  It’s been one for the record books just about any way you look at it including water usage.  We continue to use a humongous amount of water, and our last water bill north of $4700 was a bit of a shocker.  Considering though how busy it’s been, and more closely looking into it, I found that we are only up 12% from last season, while my family’s usage at home has been up 20%.  Ahh… the price of growing tomatoes this season.

cleat exchange
There’s been some cleats exchanged under the bench near the front entrance in the lobby.  Please bring cleats that are only in good condition.  All cleats left over when the pool closes will be donated to charity.

Enjoy,

Raab

ready set…

This week there’s really not much going on other than it’s the lull before the All City storm. There will be no early closures, no home meets, no big events.  Just more swimming and what’s looking to be another round of hot, but not too hot weather.  Oh, and just a little bit of meet prep too.

The mega-bleacher set up will start sometime on Thursday and will necessitate closure of about a third of the west side of the parking lot and the “south beach” grassy area.  We will be setting up other things as well but will do so on the weekend and early next week.

I did want to pass along an FYI that I will be turning down the heat starting either Thursday or Friday this week in an attempt to get the pool temp down to somewhere around 78-79 degrees for next Tuesdays’ meet.  It’s likely going to feel pretty darn cold by the end of the weekend, or at least that’s my hope.  It will be great for swimming laps and taking quick dips, but to be honest it might just be a bit cold for everything else.

Please note that we are not scheduling any parties this coming weekend, but bringing guests in should be fine.  If the weather cranks up like it did the weekend just prior to this past one, this may change, but for now things look okay other than the pool being a bit colder.

Finally, don’t forget, the pool will be closed next Tuesday, August 4th for the All City meet and will also close early at 4pm on Wednesday, August 5th, for the swim team end of the year celebration.

helping hands
I have a couple of people that have said they would lend a hand with parking and traffic control for the All City Meet.  I’m looking for probably a couple more to lend a hand.  We’ll need help primarily from about 12:30-3:30pm.  I’m also going to need a hand disassembling the bleachers after All Cities and I anticipate that to start shortly after the end of the meet, say 7:15ish.  I can use probably 6-8 people for this task.  I’m not sure how long it will take but I’m guessing a couple three hours.  Send me an email or call the pool office and let me know if you’re in.  There are plenty of other tasks that need to be taken care of as well including concessions so don’t be shy. Remember you won’t get another opportunity to volunteer at a WW All City meet for another 14 years!

thirsty club update
Well the meeting with Seattle Public Utilities pretty much confirmed that the higher than normal water consumption is primarily due to the fantastic weather and how busy the pool has been.  We came to a consensus that the shower usage is the biggest factor by a long shot.  So again, if you haven’t had the discussion about shorter showers with your own kids please do so, and if you see others taking longer than they should please let a staff member know.  As swim team winds down now we should see a significant drop in water use.  Remember, every little bit adds up.

water polo
We are getting really close to posting the 2015 details and registration for water polo.

watershow
Sign-ups will get underway later this week.  The Watershow is scheduled for Saturday, August 22nd.  Practices will be held the week prior the show and likely start around the 13th or 14th of August.

directories are in
We have way more than one hundred copies of the directory sitting in the office ready for pick-up.  Please do so before next year’s directory is published.

wifi
After 357 days, countless phone calls, emails, and meeting with people a half dozen times, the wifi is finally in!  It was not an easy road to go down whatsoever.

See you at the pool,

Raab

winding down, or not

This week we say farewell to the dual meet season Tuesday at View Ridge and kick off the championship season with B-Champs at Sand Point on Friday morning.  Fun times ahead for sure!

In the days and weeks ahead we will start the push for the big All City Meet on August 4th. Love it or hate it, it’s a really big deal and won’t come around to WW again until 2029.  So look for the call for volunteers, as we will need plenty of help to make this both a successful and fun event. We could not do it without some extra helping hands!

Around WW this week it’s going to be pretty uneventful.  No early closures, no meets, no big events.  Just more swimming and what’s looking like another great week of weather.

thirsty club
Many of you may have seen the message on the whiteboard in the lobby about our water usage this year, which has been significantly higher this season.  Not surprisingly evaporation and swimmer carry out have probably been at all time highs, coupling this with kids that like to take the super long showers after lessons and swim team, and well, that’s an area where we can make some reduction for sure.  I’m actually meeting with someone from Seattle Public Utilities to take a look at ways we can reduce the consumption.  I’ll share with you what I find out, in the meantime, you can also help by talking to your own kids about those long showers and intervening with others when you feel appropriate.  The staff will be roaming when we can as well.  Perhaps together we can curb things a tad.

last call for the lost and found
We will be taking the lost and found away and donating it to charity on Friday this week.  Unless something is clearly marked with a name, it will not be saved.  So please, if you lost something, the next few days is the time to retrieve it.

water polo
For those new here at WW and the SSSL, water polo is a much more, way more, laid-back activity than the swim team.  This laid-backness, if you will, is a league thing and not really a WW thing.  If I could I would have had all the ducks lined up and matches already on the calendar,  as of yet that has not been done or even been possible.  Despite this though it’s almost that time of year when water polo usually is starting up.  Currently coach Sarah has said she is willing to step in, but not alone, so we’re working on finding some more coaching coverage, so stay tuned.  At the same time Jacque Ives, who has been the parent lead and league representative for polo for the last several year now, is also looking for someone to start taking over her role as well.  If you have kids that play, and are interested, you might just touch base with her.  Her number can be found in the pool directory.  That leads me to…

Please include a time for each event entered by a swimmer. We will be pre-seeding the meet and having seed times will help in arranging heats. Entries without times will be seeded in earlier heats and may result in missed racing opportunities. We will not be using cards for the meet.

Relays:  Relay points will be awarded in three age groups: 19-29, 30-39, and 40+.  The youngest swimmer shall determine the age group of the relay.  Please make sure to include ages for the swimmers.

Number of Events:  All swimmers are limited to 4 events (either 3 individual/1 relay or 2 individual/2 relays).

Scoring:  Individual Events        7-5-4-3-2-1                   Relays          14-10-8-6-4-2

Awards:  There will be no ribbons this year. Trophies will be awarded to the top four (4) teams in over-all scoring.

Rules:  Current U.S. Swimming masters Rules will govern this competition.

Concessions:  There will be no concessions this year. Please plan accordingly.

Noise:  Blue Ridge is in a residential neighborhood; please respect our neighbors with limited noise during warm-up and the early hours of the adult meet.

half way?!

Yep, believe it or not this coming Wednesday marks the half-way point of the season, but what a fantastic half it has been!

I wanted to extend a thank you to all that came out to the pool on Saturday night for the food truck and cake bake.  While it was definitely disappointing that the food truck ran out of food, the cake bake was indeed fantastic.

We’ll look into another go at food trucking at some point, and figure on having more food, perhaps 2 trucks, and maybe changing the time frame too.

This week at the pool is pretty much as ordinary as they come. Other than the home meet on Thursday, it’s just another seven days of swimming outside in what now appears to be more typical Seattle summer weather.

Something I wanted to briefly touch base on this week is what to do in the event of an emergency at the pool, and in particular, what do you do if you hear the lifeguard blow his or her whistle and/or begin initiating a rescue.

Whether you find yourself on the deck or in the water, in the event that your hear a whistle, STOP and LISTEN. The staff will give instructions on what they need you to do.  They may ask you to stay put, get out of the pool, or if needed, might ask for your assistance.

As a staff we prepare for varying types and degrees of incidents on a regular basis.  This coming Monday and Tuesday we will be conducting scenarios during hours that the pool will be open, so you may indeed be witness, if not part of these drills.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

wifi
The word on the street is that we have an install date for the wifi…  Not holding my breath though.

apples
We have a couple of apple trees on the pool property and it appears that the apples on them are ready and ripe.  If you or someone you know would like some apples you are welcome to them.  They’d be great for making some apple sauce or pie. We have a basket picker on a pole at the pool available too.  Feel free to come on down and pick them.

See you at the pool,

Raab
