OPENING DAY – SATURDAY, MAY 25th @ Noon

Yes!

Saturday is go day. It’s time to kick off this, the 55th year of the Wedgwood Swim Club!

As of this writing, the motor is running, the pump is pumping, and the boiler is back on… life is good! We had a great crew come together and persevere! I want to again say thank you to this crew of assorted plumbers, electricians, motor rebuilder, handyman and board member for getting our pool back up and running. The support received from the community was extremely helpful during this stressful stretch.

Over the last several days I’ve added at least a couple, perhaps three more chapters to my institutional memory. With the knowledge gained during this incident I’ve also figured out some additional things that can be done to help mitigate the likelihood of a similar scenario like this from occurring again.

When you come to the pool this year, you will certainly notice some immediate changes. I don’t want to spoil it, but most of the changes were made for either improving the safety or the security of the club. I hope you find the changes to be an overall improvement.

A few reminders…

Please remember to sign in when you come to the pool, and if you are a Senior member please remember that we need to also check off your swim. Remember to not leave valuables in the lockers, unless you bring your own lock and you can always check wallets, phones, keys, etc., at the pool office.

The Wedgwood Swim Club is a “dry” no-alcohol, no smoking, no vaping facility.  We are a no glass facility too. It’s no fun when a glass container shatters on the pool deck.  This also goes for porcelain mugs!

If you have little one’s that are not yet potty trained, please familiarize yourself with our Double Down Diaper policy. It’s posted at the pool, you can’t miss it. Check the bulletin board with the poster of the 💩on it. If you need a swim diaper and/or swim diaper cover, those are available for purchase in the office.

BBQs and tables are on a first come first serve basis, another improvement is that we have more BBQs this year. Please keep doing what you’ve been doing, sharing is caring. Don’t forget to shut off the gas at the tank when done!

Speaking of BBQ, we originally had scheduled the opening day hot dogs and sodas last Saturday, we’ve now moved it to this coming Monday, Memorial Day.  We plan on having the grills going from 1-3pm and we’ll have some cake to serve up as well to help kick off our 55th year.

For our new members, I don’t have a plan in place for a formal orientation but please feel free to come and swim. Myself and Chris Matsumoto, my Assistant Manager, will be around this weekend as well as during the coming week at swim team practices. Please say hello, ask any questions and we’ll try our best to make you feel at home. I can also be reached via email at: manager@wwpool.org

Early morning lap swim will begin next Tuesday and run until Labor Day Weekend. So those of you that are early risers out there, you can plan on starting your morning Wedgwood routine very soon. Early laps will run from 6-7:30am.

Adult afternoon lap swim will also start next Tuesday. Afternoon laps will run until school gets out for the summer. this swim runs from 2:30-3:30pm.

Member lesson registration for session 1 will be on Wednesday, May 29th, starting at 6pm.

Sunday morning Adult Laps will start in June.

Again, the pool opens on Saturday, May 25th, at noon! Looking forward to reconnecting, and getting to know those of you that are new to the double dub over the next few days and weeks.

Back to managing, not fixing… 😊  See you at the pool!

What’s happening this week at the Double Dub…

From the Manager

Things generally seem to be going very well around the pool, and looking ahead, better weather appears to be right around the corner! AND only two weeks to go until we make the switch to the full summer swim schedule!

Some odds and ends this week…

Pool Calendar

We frequently field questions regarding what the pool schedule is. Those of you wondering might check out this link to the pool calendar as it is the go to spot for what’s happening and will be the most accurate and up to date source of information. Once you get to the page, the calendar may be viewed by week, month, or agenda. and it can be printed out as well.

EMLS

Early Morning Lap Swim started last Monday and will run weekdays for the season,
6-7:30am. I wanted let you know that we will be opening up the building/locker rooms a bit before 6am in an attempt to actually have you be able to hop right in and start swimming at 6. Also, we ask that until school is out, and we make the switch to the full summer schedule, that you are mindful of your time needed to get out, get dressed, and be on your way. We would like to wrap up/lock up no later than 7:45am.  Finally, please remember to sign in!

Aerobics

Aerobics will be back on Monday, June 25th. Here is the schedule:
12:30-1:15pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
8:00-8:45am on Tuesday and Thursday

Guests

Each household has up to 20 guests per season at $5.00/each. After the first 20, additional guests are $7 each. Register all guests at the pool office when you bring them.

Special Guest Categories
  • Care Givers:  Member’s children cared for by a “babysitter” must register their sitter at the office.  No guest fee will be charged for the sitter.  The sitter is allowed to use the pool only when responsible for those children.  Please register sitters at the beginning of each season.
  • Houseguests: Must be from out of town & living at member’s home.  Register at office with beginning and ending dates of stay. One time fee during stay is $5.00/person & count once against the 20 guest limit.
  • Teen Guests:· During full season operations teens can bring up to 2 guests any day after 7pm for $2.50/each, and do not count against the family annual allotment.
Pool Parties

Parties are geared for or a group of 6 to 12 people must be arranged through the managers or head guard in the pool office and are held during regular hours. Cost is $6.00 per guest, and does not count against the family’s 20 guests $5.00 limit.  Reservations must be made IN ADVANCE.  We ask that you limit your party to 2 hours.

Pool Rentals

Ideal for larger groups, rentals may be scheduled on Friday or Saturday PM after regular hours, or Saturday AM before pool opens. Afternoon rentals may also be available while school is in session.  2 hr rental = 1.5 hours in pool with last half hour out of pool.  Costs vary depending on size of group.  Please contact Raab at pool office for more information or to schedule a rental.

BBQ reminder

In doing my rounds one night last week I found a bbq left on.  Please double check that when you are finished that the bbq is OFF. Also, please turn off the tank.

Internship – last call

Are you 14-15 years old? We’ll be offering the internship again this year. The deadline for signing up is this Friday June15th. For more information and an application click here.

Looking Ahead

  • Adult Party and Kids Fun Float, Saturday, June 23rd 7-10pm
  • Adult Team – Workouts begin on Monday, June 25th and will be Monday and Wednesdays from 8-9pm.  The Adult Meet date has changed and will now be the morning of Saturday, July 28th at Aqua Club.
  • Swim Team Overnighter, June 30th – July 1, details to come.

What’s This?
This is our almost vintage pool vacuum. I remember former Wedgwood Manager, Peter Klein buying this thing over 30 years ago. Once a week we still use this thing to help clean up the pool. Additionally, we now have not one, but two robotic “Dolphin” pool cleaners with one of them deployed on a daily basis. It doesn’t take much to mess up the pool, so please, if you could help us by keeping those band-aids, bobby pins, and whatnot out of the pool to begin with it would be much appreciated.

Counting down the days…

LANDSCAPE:

POOL LANDSCAPE PARTY
This year our annual landscape event will be held on Saturday May 5 from 10am to 4pm. The time commitment is 3 hours per family.

A few changes this year:

  1. The big landscape projects are done.  We have weeding, raking, and sweeping to be done – not glamorous, but necessary. Please bring buckets, weeding tools, rakes etc.
  2. Very Important, Check-in time will be from 10am to 1pm ONLY. I know scheduling for families is difficult, last year many folks came at the end of the day and there was nothing to do. I don’t want to waste your day. As a result, sign-in cutoff will be1pm.
  3. This plan is a firm at this time-but if needs dictate and we are able to schedule another landscape party you will be notified via the WW Pool Newsletter. So please keep current on emails from the pool, and spread the word about landscape party.

Pool Manager:

Wedgwood Swim Pool has always been a strong community. As managers, our job is to make decisions to best meet the needs of all those who enjoy Wedgwood pool.  As the community changes, we must be prepared to adjust the operations of the pool.  Over the past several years, we have identified new needs for lap swimmers, water aerobics participants, swim team members, and community members participating in the lesson program.  While we have been able to make minor adjustments to better accommodate certain groups, we feel the time has come to make more significant changes to pool schedules to better meet the needs of the Wedgwood community.

After consulting with the swim coaches, lesson coordinator and the board we have developed a New Schedule for Swim Team Practice.  The new schedule has taken into account feedback from families over the past few years, as well as addressing issues identified by the coaching staff.  We believe the changes will better support the growth and development of the Wedgwood swimmers.

Early Season Evening Practices:
6-6:30PM = 8 years and under
6:30-7:10PM = 9-10 year olds
7:10-8:00PM = 11-12 year olds
8:00-9:00PM = 13 years & Up
Summer Morning Practices:
7:00-7:30AM = 15 & up (lanes 1 & 2 practice for swimmers who have jobs)
7:30-9:00AM = 13 years & Up
9:00-9:30AM = 8 years and under
9:30-10:15AM = 9-10 year olds
10:15-11:00AM = 11-12 year olds

We will also be making changes to lap swim and the lesson program which will be announced in the coming weeks.  These adjustments also reflect the changing needs of our community.  We realize that any change has an impact on your summer. And we wanted to share this information as soon as it was available.

We look forward to sunnier days and seeing you all back at Wedgwood Swim Pool for summer 2018!

August… rollin’ along

From the manager…

ROAD CLOSURE!

Latest Update:

Word on the street about the street is that the roadwork is scheduled for Friday now, not Thursday, however the word from SDOT when I called says they are doing it Thursday…

We’ll let you know what we know when we know it…

The most immediate information I need to share with you is that the Seattle Department of Transportation – SDOT, will be working on 28th AVE NE from NE 75th to the pool this Thursday, August 17th. I have been told that the work is scheduled to start around noon and that the road will not be drivable for up to 6 hours after the work is completed. We will remain open so if you plan on coming to the pool that day plan on using alternative routes to get here.

WATERSHOW
The other big news this week is that the Watershow is coming up on Saturday!  The show will start at dusk – right around 8:30pm.  Also this year we’ll be having the BeanFish foodtruck on site from 6:30-8:30pm. Yum. So come grab a bite and enjoy the show.

Please note that the pool will be closing early at 7pm both on Friday for the rehearsal, and then again on Saturday for the big show.

ADULT PARTY.2
On Saturday, August 26th we’ll be having the 2nd and final adult party of the season. There will be drinks and light bites on the upper deck starting at 7pm and the party is scheduled to run until 10pm.  Also during the party there will be an Almost Anything Goes but sadly there will be no bull riding as that beast ended up biting the dust during our last Anything Goes.

This week at Wedgwood – June 12th – June 18th

From the manager…
Sometimes things go a little sideways and that’s exactly what happened today (Sunday) in the womens’ locker room.

If you weren’t at the pool, or haven’t already heard, the full size mirror attached to the changing stall came crashing down.  Frightening to say the least.  Fortunately, no one was injured but the clean up will take a bit more time than we anticipated, therefore the womens’ locker room will be closed on Monday morning during early morning lap swim.

I want to apologize for this inconvenience and truly wish I were able to give more advance notice but after the initial cleaning, which involved a good deal of sweeping, vacuuming, and then spraying, it was still evident that there is more to clean up.  The floor needs to be completely dry to get the job done and that is why we need to keep the locker room closed a bit longer. So with more cleaning on the schedule for tomorrow morning it is our hope that things will soon be back to being a bit more normal.

As far as the mirror goes, prior to making any decisions on replacement, we’ll be taking a good look at why it came down and better systems for fastening.

Now besides all this excitement there is a home meet this week!  Wedg vs Wood on Thursday. Please note that the pool will not be open for general swim that afternoon but will be open for the afternoon lap swim from 2:30-3:30.

Also the pool will stay open an little bit longer this coming Friday and Saturday – 8pm closing!

See you at the pool this week.

TIME TRIALS (for 12 & Unders only) – Saturday, June 10th @ 10:00 am (warm-up begins at 9:30)

Time Trials is basically a baseline test for the swimmers in our younger three age groups. We like getting times for them all at the beginning of the year, so we know where they started and track the improvement as the summer goes along. This will not take very long, we will ask each swimmer to try each of the strokes (this is not required, they can do any or all of the events) and it moves along pretty quickly. I assume we’ll be finished by 11:30 am.

We will be talking to the swimmers about this during the week and making sure we’re preparing them for what to expect.
