It’s already mid-season…

Last week was pretty darn crazy and I’m running a little behind in getting this out. Better late than never. In retrospect, my ramblings last week sadly turned out to be pretty prophetic. I don’t want to jinx myself again so I’m going to stay away from talking about anything that can potentially close the pool down.

With the exception of our last dual home meet tomorrow, we have nothing extraordinary going on until July 30th, when we will host Boys Prelims. So enjoy this long stretch of unadulterated pool time and let’s hope we get some fantastic weather to go along with it.

Speaking of Boys Prelims, we’re going to need a lot of extra help in pulling this meet off. Look for volunteer sign ups soon in the pool lobby, and more information in my next email as well.

See you at the pool.

Lost and Found

The lost and found is already starting to grow again. At this point we plan on purging before Boys Prelims. Please check it before then, and we’ll put it out in the pool lobby a few days just prior so we can then start this process all over again.

Driving and Parking

During the meet last week on Tuesday one of our neighbors up the hill on 28th had their car, which was parked on the street, hit, not once, but twice. No note, no nothing.

As you are all well aware, traffic can get pretty crazy coming to and from the pool, especially at swim meets, but also during the morning as well. Our club is located in the heart of a residential neighborhood where many kids are living, playing, out and about. Let’s help keep them safe and please drive slowly!

Also remember to park only where it’s legal to do so. Don’t block driveways and pay attention to parking signs. If you don’t, you run the risk of being ticketed or towed.

Thank you for being neighborly!

From the Manager

It’s going to be a busy week. We have not one, but two home meets this week, so make a note that on both Tuesday (picture day) and Thursday, the pool will be closing at 4pm. We’ll also be closing early next Tuesday (senior meet) for our last dual meet at home this season.  It’s kind of a crazy schedule this year for sure.

On Saturday, it’s the annual Cake Bake event and then some. More details below.

There are also a couple of other things I’d like to touch base on, the first being alcohol consumption at the pool. There has been some evidence of late that I need to send out a reminder that the Wedgwood Swim Club is a “dry” facility. This means that alcoholic beverages of any kind are not permitted. In addition, the consumption of anything intoxicating or otherwise mind altering while on the premises is also not allowed. It should also go without saying that if you have imbibed please don’t come to the pool.

The other thing I wanted to bring up has to do with AFRs or Accidental Feces Release into the pool as I’ve been getting a fair share of emails regarding the issue. Procedures are in place for the clean up of AFR, as well as other contaminates. Unfortunately it’s not a matter of if AFRs will occur, it’s a matter of when. Please help us keep the pool as uncontaminated as possible!

Prevention is paramount when it comes to keeping the pool water clean. Double diapering and being proactive by taking regular bathroom breaks with the little ones is extremely helpful and important. Also being aware that individuals who have had gastrointestinal issues/diarrhea recently should be staying out of the pool. No ifs, ands, or buts, a diarrheal AFR will take us out of commission for an entire day and that would truly be a poopy situation.

See you at the pool.

Chili Potluck and Cake Bake this Saturday, July 13th

The Cake Bake is a rite of summer at Wedgwood.  Once a year children, families, or friends bake and decorate cakes according to that year’s theme.  It is a tasty way to express your creativity and pretend you work for the Food Network. After the judging, then we eat! Cake and ice cream is served by the staff.  Theme: Mother Goose & Brothers Grimm.

Schedule: Cakes should arrive between 6- 6:30pm, viewing from 7-7:30, judging 7:45, and then serving them up until they’re gone.

The chili feed has returned! Enjoy dinner before the Cake Bake coming up this Saturday. The chili feed potluck will commence about 6pm. We’ll save the judging for the cakes only this year, so no pressure. Prepare your favorite family chili recipe and bring it to the pool to share. Drinks, chili toppings, and chips will be provided.

In addition, there will be a fun float from 7-9:30pm, so we’ve got a really fun filled evening in store!

FYI, there will be no lap lanes in the pool during this time.

Lost and Found

With 3 home meets in the next 9 days our lost and found is about to grow exponentially.  Please take a look at the items on the table in the lobby and claim them by Wednesday at noon.  After that this particular pile will be donated to make way for the “new” lost and found.

Adult Team practices started last week

Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-9pm. The Adult Meet will be on Saturday morning, July 27th @ Innis Arden.

t’s July!  😎  Here’s what’s happening this week.

From the Manager

Wait? What? It’s July already?

Is anyone else feeling out of sync? I’ll admit that I certainly am. Now that schools are out and we are finally into our full time schedule, perhaps I’ll finally get into my summer groove. Better late than never!

Some notable reminders to touch base on:

  • Regular open swim hours typically will run 12-9pm on weekends, and 1-9pm weekdays.
  • Family Swim is weekdays from 5:30-7:00pm. This is a quieter time at the club, perfect for families with small children. Keep in mind that those swimmers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult family member during the Family Swim time.
  • Teen Swim is daily after 7pm. Teen members can bring in up to 3 guests for $2.50 per guest.  These do not count against the 20 guest allotment.
  • Early morning lap swim will continue weekdays from 6-7:30am.
  • Adult afternoon lapswim is no longer happening but there will be two lap lanes available during open swim hours and we will continue to have the adult laps on Sunday mornings, 11am-12.
  • Monday and Wednesday from 8-9pm adult team practice will close the entire south end of the pool. This is probably not a good time swim laps unless you are intent on swimming with the team.

This week, with the holiday, there will be some modifications to the schedule, details can be found in the remainder of this email. As always, for the most up to date schedule information please check the website/calendar.

Enjoy the week and have a fun, safe, 4th!

See you at the pool!

Raab

Here’s What’s Happening…

From the Manager

Yet another short week, and this Thursday the pool will only be open for early morning and afternoon lap swim, so please make a note of that.

Speaking of lap swimming it’s time for my annual explanation of lap lane etiquette.

As the number of swimmers in our community swimming laps continues to increase, so does the need for those lap swimmers to be aware of their relative speed within their lane and for them to make any necessary adjustments. This will help ensure better enjoyment, reduce frustration, and avoid possible collisions or crashes between swimmers.

As a staff we are committed to doing a better job of designating lanes during lap swimming. Please respect the staff if you are asked to change lanes. This may mean for swimmers who have swum for years in for example, lane 2, may now find themselves unmatched for that lane’s current designation and be asked to move. Change can be hard but again for this system to work we need everyone to cooperate and understand that some long standing routines may have to be altered.

We will have much greater success and happiness if a couple of things can happen. First, being aware of your own ability and skill level and how you swim relative to others around you.  For example, one day you may indeed be the fastest when compared others, another day not so.  I liken it to driving on the freeway; know your speed relative to traffic and road conditions. You can’t easily drive 60 mph when conditions or the lane you are in call for going 40 mph.  And going 40 mph when traffic is going 60 mph doesn’t work well either.  The same goes for swimming laps! Some days there will be more “traffic” in the lanes, change lanes and adjust if you need to so that things flow as smoothly as possible.

Communication with the other people swimming is another thing to consider. Sometimes just a friendly hello, or a thank you for sharing a lane can go a long way. Other times you may be asked to change from swimming straight down the lane to circle swimming as more people hop in t work out.

Now of course along with some communication and common courtesy there are a few simple guideline that should help as well, however like the rules of the road, these guidelines are only effective if they are followed.

  • Make sure you are in the correct lane.
  • If you are lapping people in the slower lane, consider moving to the faster lane.
  • If you are being lapped in the faster lane, consider moving to the slower lane.
  • Always swim counterclockwise when there are more than two swimmers, staying to the right of the center of the lane.
  • Turn in the middle of the lane at the wall and then move to the right.
  • Tap the toes of the swimmer in front of you if you would like to pass that person.
  • Understand that a toe tap is okay and allow that swimmer to move ahead of you.
  • If your toes have been tapped, stop at the wall and let that person pass.  If you are the tapper, make sure there is a large gap between the next 2 swimmers….  Sometimes people can only go as fast as the person in front of them.
  • Leave 5 seconds minimum between you and the swimmer in front of you.
  • If you pull over or sit out a lap, move to the right side of the lane on the wall, so that you are out of the way of swimmers turning.
  • Be aware where others are in your lane.
  • Don’t push off in front of someone about to turn.

I’ll wrap this up with a big shout out this week. That shout goes to Mr. Tom Lee. Tom is very self aware when it comes to lap swimming and he was recently noticed switching lanes to accommodate other swimmers around him. Way to go Tom!

See you at the pool!

Sunny Days Ahead!

From the Manager

Well the weather forecast is looking pretty, darn, decent.

Other than the weather, this week’s schedule looks pretty much like the last one. The only difference is that coming up on Saturday morning we will have time trials for our 12 & unders. More information about that should be coming out to our swim team members later today.

A big thank you to those that offered to help our octogenarian member out.

Counting down the days until school is out, but there seems like there’s way too many to count.

See you at the pool!

Wedgwood Pool Internship

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to tell you all about an opportunity for members who are 14 years and up.  The Wedgwood Internship will start July 1 (Monday).  The purpose of the Wedgwood internship is to provide prospective candidates with an opportunity to:

  • Gain experience with the tasks and responsibilities of a Wedgwood staff member
  • Learn about the expectations of employment (i.e., what it means to have a job)
  • Be evaluated based on performance for future positions (rather than on interview and application alone)
  • Develop new skills and receive feedback from management

Qualifications: Participants must be 14 years of age by the start of the internship.

If you are interested in participating, click here, complete the form, and return it to Wedgwood Swim Pool and ask the staff to place the form in Chris Matsumoto’s box or scan and email by 6/19/19.

OPENING DAY – SATURDAY, MAY 25th @ Noon

Yes!

Saturday is go day. It’s time to kick off this, the 55th year of the Wedgwood Swim Club!

As of this writing, the motor is running, the pump is pumping, and the boiler is back on… life is good! We had a great crew come together and persevere! I want to again say thank you to this crew of assorted plumbers, electricians, motor rebuilder, handyman and board member for getting our pool back up and running. The support received from the community was extremely helpful during this stressful stretch.

Over the last several days I’ve added at least a couple, perhaps three more chapters to my institutional memory. With the knowledge gained during this incident I’ve also figured out some additional things that can be done to help mitigate the likelihood of a similar scenario like this from occurring again.

When you come to the pool this year, you will certainly notice some immediate changes. I don’t want to spoil it, but most of the changes were made for either improving the safety or the security of the club. I hope you find the changes to be an overall improvement.

A few reminders…

Please remember to sign in when you come to the pool, and if you are a Senior member please remember that we need to also check off your swim. Remember to not leave valuables in the lockers, unless you bring your own lock and you can always check wallets, phones, keys, etc., at the pool office.

The Wedgwood Swim Club is a “dry” no-alcohol, no smoking, no vaping facility.  We are a no glass facility too. It’s no fun when a glass container shatters on the pool deck.  This also goes for porcelain mugs!

If you have little one’s that are not yet potty trained, please familiarize yourself with our Double Down Diaper policy. It’s posted at the pool, you can’t miss it. Check the bulletin board with the poster of the 💩on it. If you need a swim diaper and/or swim diaper cover, those are available for purchase in the office.

BBQs and tables are on a first come first serve basis, another improvement is that we have more BBQs this year. Please keep doing what you’ve been doing, sharing is caring. Don’t forget to shut off the gas at the tank when done!

Speaking of BBQ, we originally had scheduled the opening day hot dogs and sodas last Saturday, we’ve now moved it to this coming Monday, Memorial Day.  We plan on having the grills going from 1-3pm and we’ll have some cake to serve up as well to help kick off our 55th year.

For our new members, I don’t have a plan in place for a formal orientation but please feel free to come and swim. Myself and Chris Matsumoto, my Assistant Manager, will be around this weekend as well as during the coming week at swim team practices. Please say hello, ask any questions and we’ll try our best to make you feel at home. I can also be reached via email at: manager@wwpool.org

Early morning lap swim will begin next Tuesday and run until Labor Day Weekend. So those of you that are early risers out there, you can plan on starting your morning Wedgwood routine very soon. Early laps will run from 6-7:30am.

Adult afternoon lap swim will also start next Tuesday. Afternoon laps will run until school gets out for the summer. this swim runs from 2:30-3:30pm.

Member lesson registration for session 1 will be on Wednesday, May 29th, starting at 6pm.

Sunday morning Adult Laps will start in June.

Again, the pool opens on Saturday, May 25th, at noon! Looking forward to reconnecting, and getting to know those of you that are new to the double dub over the next few days and weeks.

Back to managing, not fixing… 😊  See you at the pool!

Pool Opening Update

You may have already seen a similar update on Facebook last night…

The short story is that there is an issue with our newly rebuilt motor. This morning our electrician will be contacting the rebuilder to try and figure things out. I’m hoping there’s something that they can easily figure out. We’re still going to have to pull this motor/pump again, and this sets us back at a minimum of at least a couple more days. Even if everything goes well we’ll need another day then to get the pool back up to temp, filtered, and chemically balanced as well.  That being said, I know that Saturday would be the earliest possible day that could possibly now be open.

Again, I will continue to update as the situation develops and I have more information to share.

Please know that we are sourcing both a new motor and pump too.

I do want to say that your support and patience with this have been very much appreciated, and while I know it’s a big ask, we’re going to need both a bit longer.

Pool Update… we’re working hard but…

Putting things back together is taking a bit longer than I had honestly hoped… At this point based on where we are with getting things back together, and the list of things that will still need to happen, I’m thinking that opening Wednesday is very unlikely. I will update here as well as send out an email if and when I get home tonight…😔

Pool Opening Update… no Tuesday

There is still a bit more work that needs to be done to the motor/pump, but the rebuilder seemed confident that he will have it ready for us to pick up on Tuesday morning. He will update me mid-day on Monday. Based on what I know right now I’m hoping that we’ll be able to open up the pool on Wednesday.

I will send out updates on our social media accounts more frequently than via email, but you can expect another email likely Tuesday, late evening, or Wednesday morning.
