Here’s What’s Happening…

From the Manager

Yet another short week, and this Thursday the pool will only be open for early morning and afternoon lap swim, so please make a note of that.

Speaking of lap swimming it’s time for my annual explanation of lap lane etiquette.

As the number of swimmers in our community swimming laps continues to increase, so does the need for those lap swimmers to be aware of their relative speed within their lane and for them to make any necessary adjustments. This will help ensure better enjoyment, reduce frustration, and avoid possible collisions or crashes between swimmers.

As a staff we are committed to doing a better job of designating lanes during lap swimming. Please respect the staff if you are asked to change lanes. This may mean for swimmers who have swum for years in for example, lane 2, may now find themselves unmatched for that lane’s current designation and be asked to move. Change can be hard but again for this system to work we need everyone to cooperate and understand that some long standing routines may have to be altered.

We will have much greater success and happiness if a couple of things can happen. First, being aware of your own ability and skill level and how you swim relative to others around you.  For example, one day you may indeed be the fastest when compared others, another day not so.  I liken it to driving on the freeway; know your speed relative to traffic and road conditions. You can’t easily drive 60 mph when conditions or the lane you are in call for going 40 mph.  And going 40 mph when traffic is going 60 mph doesn’t work well either.  The same goes for swimming laps! Some days there will be more “traffic” in the lanes, change lanes and adjust if you need to so that things flow as smoothly as possible.

Communication with the other people swimming is another thing to consider. Sometimes just a friendly hello, or a thank you for sharing a lane can go a long way. Other times you may be asked to change from swimming straight down the lane to circle swimming as more people hop in t work out.

Now of course along with some communication and common courtesy there are a few simple guideline that should help as well, however like the rules of the road, these guidelines are only effective if they are followed.

  • Make sure you are in the correct lane.
  • If you are lapping people in the slower lane, consider moving to the faster lane.
  • If you are being lapped in the faster lane, consider moving to the slower lane.
  • Always swim counterclockwise when there are more than two swimmers, staying to the right of the center of the lane.
  • Turn in the middle of the lane at the wall and then move to the right.
  • Tap the toes of the swimmer in front of you if you would like to pass that person.
  • Understand that a toe tap is okay and allow that swimmer to move ahead of you.
  • If your toes have been tapped, stop at the wall and let that person pass.  If you are the tapper, make sure there is a large gap between the next 2 swimmers….  Sometimes people can only go as fast as the person in front of them.
  • Leave 5 seconds minimum between you and the swimmer in front of you.
  • If you pull over or sit out a lap, move to the right side of the lane on the wall, so that you are out of the way of swimmers turning.
  • Be aware where others are in your lane.
  • Don’t push off in front of someone about to turn.

I’ll wrap this up with a big shout out this week. That shout goes to Mr. Tom Lee. Tom is very self aware when it comes to lap swimming and he was recently noticed switching lanes to accommodate other swimmers around him. Way to go Tom!

See you at the pool!

Sunny Days Ahead!

From the Manager

Well the weather forecast is looking pretty, darn, decent.

Other than the weather, this week’s schedule looks pretty much like the last one. The only difference is that coming up on Saturday morning we will have time trials for our 12 & unders. More information about that should be coming out to our swim team members later today.

A big thank you to those that offered to help our octogenarian member out.

Counting down the days until school is out, but there seems like there’s way too many to count.

See you at the pool!
