Monthly Archives: July 2017

Goodbye July… …Hello August

From the manager…

I would like to start off by saying thank you to all that helped put on a very successful prelims for the girls last Monday. I have been doing these meets for a long time and truly feel that it was the crazy busiest one of them all.  I’m also absolutely certain that we could not have done it without the help of our many volunteers. Again, Thank you!

This week the swim team season [finally] wraps up.  The All City meet is at Innis on Tuesday and then on Wednesday we’ll be having our end of the year dinner and awards night.  Please note that the pool will be closing at 5pm on Wednesday for this event.

Our other swim team, the Adults, took 1st place at their meet this past Saturday!  Way to go! And a big thank you to Brenda Tomtan for stepping in and taking over as our volunteer head coach!

Looking ahead it’s going to be hot, Hot, HOT.  While I know that closing the pool early for the swim team on Wednesday is a complete bummer, we will very likely be extending the hours on both Thursday, Friday, perhaps beyond, to help beat the heat. I’ll be sending out a reminder via email as well as posting updates on Facebook to get the word out. I might also be sending out word on whether or not to limit or not bring guests depending on how things play out. So please stay tuned!

Early Morning Lap Swim is extended until 7:30am for the remainder of it’s run. So now you can sleep in a little later and/or just swim a little longer.

I wanted to let all of you that partake in water aerobics know that it will run through Friday, August 25th.

Water Polo sign-ups are going on now. Water polo actually starts this week! Stop by the pool office for more info or to sign up. You can also find information on our web page.

The Watershow is scheduled for Saturday, August 19th. Sign-ups to participate in this annual rite of summer have begun. Stop by the pool lobby and put down your deets. Groups will be formed and the practice schedule then ironed out.

Upcoming Road Closure on 8/17 – Planning ahead – This past week I was contacted by the Seattle Dept. of Transportation regarding an upcoming road closure on Wednesday, August 17th, of 28th AVE NE, north of NE 75th down to the pool. At this time I have been told that the work is scheduled to start around noon and that the road will not be drivable for the remainder of that day. I will update if the date or duration of the closure changes. Note that the pool will remain open during regardless of the day the roadwork occurs.

Rerun on this, remember guests must be accompanied by the pool member while they are at the pool. This does mean that you should remain at the pool while your guests are using the facility.

See you at the pool!

 -Raab

today, tomorrow and the next days…

From the manager…

Other than early morning lap swim, the pool will be closed on Monday for Girls’ Prelims. Just note that with any luck the water temperature will be right around 75 degrees at 6am on Monday, so if you are planning on swimming laps in the early morning, you’ll likely either love it or hate it.

Remember there won’t be any lessons or aerobics on Monday, nor will the pool open after the meet is over, as the staff will be working to get everything cleaned up and put away so we can go right back normal again starting on Tuesday.

Now that Girls’ Prelims is less than 24 hours away I have a better idea of where we are coming in short in the way of volunteers. At this point including all of the the north end clubs and WW, we still have right around 12 timing slots to fill, so if you can time, we need you! Be it first half 3:30-5:30, or second half, after 5:30, or the whole thing,  send me an email and I will put you down!

Other than the all consuming swim meet tomorrow there are a couple of other things I thought I should touch base on.  First, I did want to let you know that I have extremely high confidence in our double down diaper policy as it was reported by the parent of a little one that their double diaper did indeed work as intended!  That was great news and we avoided shutting down for a time on what was quite a busy afternoon.  Unfortunately later in the week though we had to close the pool for a bit when something unexpected came up, both literally and figuratively. Overall though it’s been a much better summer all the way around for these sorts of incidences and I’m hoping the trend continues.

A reminder about guests. Guests must be accompanied by the pool member while they are at the pool. Also remember that each membership gets 20 guests at a rate of $5/guest. Guests beyond that allotment are $7/guest. Also if you are planning on bringing a group of 6-12 people please let us know in advance and sign up for a party. The party rate is $6/non-member.

Lastly this week I’d like to put a plug in for the pool board. These are people that meet monthly and work on some of the nitty gritty things that are essential to keeping this club functioning in the here and now, as well as making decisions about where WW is heading into the future. These year-round positions even come with a little bit of a discount on the annual dues too. The time is near for some new people to step up, you might be asked, please think about it.

See you at the pool!

A wonderful week at WW…

From the manager…

A nice week on tap here at WW.  No home meets, no big events, just more sunny days ahead…  Enjoy it!

Next week things get a little more crazy as we host Girls’ Prelims on Monday.  Other than EMLS that day the pool will not be open.  So make note of that.

Speaking of Girls’ Prelims, we’re still looking for volunteers! Now we’re known league wide for running really great meets here and one of the biggest factors in that has been all of the many hours our volunteers put into helping pull these things off.  That being said, there are still many jobs to fill from helping direct parking to selling at concessions so if you’ve got a couple of hours on Monday the 24th, sign up when you are at the pool this week, or send Cindy Katz an email and she’ll put you down.

One thing I want everyone to be aware of is that because of prelims we will gradually be lowering the pool temp over this coming weekend. We’d like to have the pool temp around 78 degrees at the meet start time, which is considerably lower than our usual 84. So be aware, the water will most certainly be a little more refreshing than usual starting on Friday.

See you at the pool!

Tie Dye, Two Home Meets and a Cake Bake too…

From the manager…

This week is going to be a busy one at the double dub!  Tie dye days are happening on Monday and Tuesday, well the dye part is really happening Monday, Tuesday is rinse day. We also have not one, but TWO home meets this week… crazy I know! Finally we’ll wrap it all up on Saturday with the annual Cake Bake!

So here’s the skinny, tie dye is happening in the mornings during and around the kids’ practice times. They are still looking for help to make this happen so if at all possible stop by, and if they still need help, and you can, don’t be shy!

The pool will be closing early on both Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm. Sorry about that, but we need time to set up for the swim meets. Tuesday, Sheridan Beach will be coming to visit, and then on Thursday, the last home meet for our seniors, the Sand Point swimmers will joining us for a nice cozy evening around the pool deck.  We are still looking for volunteers for both meets so get on team unify and sign up!

On Saturday we have the annual Cake Bake thing happening.  The theme this year…

The Cake Bake is scheduled to start around 6pm and all cakes should be on site by 6:30. Cakes will then be on display from 7-7:30. Judging and eating will ensue shortly thereafter.  Also during the Cake Bake it will be Almost Anything Goes from 7-9:30pm. Please note the lap lanes will not be open during this time.

See you around -Raab

Coach Matt has been getting a great response to this but I thought I’d run it one more week…

Searching For Old Swim Team Photos and Banquet Programs

In hopes of properly documenting the wonderful and storied history of the Wedgwood Swim Team, Coach Matt is asking for old Swim Team Photos (whole team pictures) and old Banquet Programs from years gone by.

For Team Pictures, I am in need of years prior to 2009, other than several I already have from the 90s (I currently have ’90, ’91, ’93, ’94, ’95, ’96).

For Banquet Programs, I will take any that you have, other than ’89, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’94, ’95, ’96, ’15.

There will be a folder in the office all summer long for anybody to leave a photo or program for me. We will make sure to label the item to ensure you get it back and scan them in hopes of returning them to you quickly.

OR, if you already have an electronic copy, please email them to me at mattymmiller@gmail.com

For my final request, I would also love to have pictures of any current swim team parents WHO ARE ALSO Wedgwood Swim Team alums from when they were on swim team or hanging out at Wedgwood Pool. We are excited about the generations that come through Wedgwood and I’m hoping to put something together to highlight the amazing numbers we have as 2nd and 3rd generation swimmers.

The same process will apply for either hard copies of photos (a folder in the office) or electronic copies (email me). Please label who you all are (with maiden names too, if applicable), so I don’t have to do too much guessing.

Thanks for all the help! -Coach Matt

This week at WW, July 3rd – 9th

From the manager…

This week will a bit different around the double dub.  First we start off with Monday the 3rd, which for the most part will be like any other regular day, the only exception is that there will not be competitive stroke classes. Everything else will remain on the same schedule, for Monday…

On Tuesday the 4th however, we’ll be on a bit of a holiday schedule, with a late morning lap swim from 10-noon and also an almost anything goes from 2:30-5pm. General swim hours will be 12-7pm.  No EMLS, Aerobics, Lessons, or Swim Team.

Wednesday morning from 8:30am – Noon will be member lesson registration for session 2.

Thursday WW will visit Innis Arden for a meet and if you aren’t going to the meet it will again be a very quiet evening around our pool.  During the last away meet we had less than 10 people come swimming all evening.

Friday things will get a little more crazy and busy as it’s the annual swim team overnighter.

Registration forms are available at the pool and we ask that kids be signed up by 5pm on Friday.

See you around that hole in the ground -Raab
