Wedgwood Internship Info

Hello Wedgwood Families,

Below is the information about the Wedgwood Internship.

The internship was started in 2013 as a way to provide both training and experience for individuals interested in learning about working at Wedgwood Swim Pool.  However, we believe that the skills and competencies learned can be applied to numerous employment opportunities.  Below you will find some information about the internship as well as a schedule for meeting times.

The purpose of the Wedgwood internship is to provide prospective candidates with an opportunity to:

  • Gain experience with the tasks and responsibilities of a Wedgwood staff member
  • Learn about the expectations of employment (i.e., what it means to have a job)
  • Be evaluated based on performance for future positions (rather than on interview and application alone)
  • Develop new skills and receive feedback from management

Qualifications: Participants must be 14 years of age by the start of the internship.

Interns will have a variety of opportunities and experiences to assist staff during shifts or events:

  • Internship Meetings: opportunities to learn practical skills from Wedgwood Staff Members, to ask questions about the specifics of working at Wedgwood Swim Pool and receive training similar to the Wedgwood Staff
  • Job Shadowing: gain experience while volunteering with Wedgwood Staff members during:
    • Swim Lessons, Lifeguarding, Maintenance, Swim Meet Clean Up, and Special Events (4th of July Games, Cake Bake, etc.)
    • NOTE: These activities can be used for community service hour requirements.
    • During all experiences, interns will be assisting certified employees of Wedgwood Swim Pool.  They will never have the sole responsibility of providing instruction or supervision as an intern.

Commitment

We do not have any specific requirements in terms of time for this internship.  ALL activities are open to any of the interns and no person will be required to participate.  These activities are here for the interns’ learning.

Employment

Participation in the internship does not guarantee future employment at Wedgwood Swim Pool.  Potential candidates do NOT need to participate in the internship program in order to be considered for a position on the staff.

Sign-up

If you are interested in participating, please complete and sign the attached form and return it to Wedgwood Swim Pool and ask the staff to place the form in Chris Matsumoto’s box by 7/7/17.

This week @ WW June 27th – July 2nd

from the manager…

It’s sure felt like summer yesterday!  It was one of those situations where the super hot weather and an early season Sunday combined to push us very close to our maximum bather load. In fact, we’ve not gotten even close to that since July 2009!

Now I’m usually pretty on the ball with regard to sending out requests to limit guests on these sorts of days, but this time around my mind was certainly elsewhere.  I think the end of the school year, as well as my wedding anniversary, also yesterday, and well, the pool was the furthest thing from my mind. Things all worked out in the end but in the future the request to limit and/or not bring in guests will likely return as we all want to avoid a situation where we have to shut the doors on our membership because of an overcrowded pool.

So with schools closed and the sun out it’s time to slide right into full time summer mode!

The schedule is a changing this week starting Tuesday.  So read on and take note.  Keep in mind we also have an away meet on Tuesday, hint, a great night for those not on the swim team to enjoy a much quieter club. On Thursday we have our first real deal home meet of the season, which will certainly be less than quiet.  Also heads up, Thursday is team picture day as well, which means we will be setting up for the meet a tad earlier than usual to accommodate the picture taking.

Both Family and Teen Swims start on Tuesday this week as well. Details on those can be found below.

See you at the pool!  -Raab

Family Swim
Family Swim starts on Tuesday and will run weekdays from 5:30-7:00pm.  This is a quieter time at the club, perfect for families with small children.  Keep in mind that those swimmers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult family member during the Family Swim time.

Teen Swim
Teen Swim is daily after 7pm. Teen members can bring in up to 3 guests for $2.50 per guest.  These do not count against the guest allotment.

Water Aerobics
Aerobics are back and start Tuesday, June 27th.  The schedule is M, W, F from 12-12:45pm and on T, Th from 8-8:45am.

Reruns from last week:

Searching For Old Swim Team Photos and Banquet Programs

In hopes of properly documenting the wonderful and storied history of the Wedgwood Swim Team, Coach Matt is asking for old Swim Team Photos (whole team pictures) and old Banquet Programs from years gone by.

For Team Pictures, I am in need of years prior to 2009, other than several I already have from the 90s (I currently have ’90, ’91, ’93, ’94, ’95, ’96).

For Banquet Programs, I will take any that you have, other than ’89, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’94, ’95, ’96, ’15.

There will be a folder in the office all summer long for anybody to leave a photo or program for me. We will make sure to label the item to ensure you get it back and scan them in hopes of returning them to you quickly.

OR, if you already have an electronic copy, please email them to me at mattymmiller@gmail.com

For my final request, I would also love to have pictures of any current swim team parents WHO ARE ALSO Wedgwood Swim Team alums from when they were on swim team or hanging out at Wedgwood Pool. We are excited about the generations that come through Wedgwood and I’m hoping to put something together to highlight the amazing numbers we have as 2nd and 3rd generation swimmers.

The same process will apply for either hard copies of photos (a folder in the office) or electronic copies (email me). Please label who you all are (with maiden names too, if applicable), so I don’t have to do too much guessing.

Thanks for all the help! -Coach Matt

This week at Wedgwood – June 12th – June 18th

From the manager…
Sometimes things go a little sideways and that’s exactly what happened today (Sunday) in the womens’ locker room.

If you weren’t at the pool, or haven’t already heard, the full size mirror attached to the changing stall came crashing down.  Frightening to say the least.  Fortunately, no one was injured but the clean up will take a bit more time than we anticipated, therefore the womens’ locker room will be closed on Monday morning during early morning lap swim.

I want to apologize for this inconvenience and truly wish I were able to give more advance notice but after the initial cleaning, which involved a good deal of sweeping, vacuuming, and then spraying, it was still evident that there is more to clean up.  The floor needs to be completely dry to get the job done and that is why we need to keep the locker room closed a bit longer. So with more cleaning on the schedule for tomorrow morning it is our hope that things will soon be back to being a bit more normal.

As far as the mirror goes, prior to making any decisions on replacement, we’ll be taking a good look at why it came down and better systems for fastening.

Now besides all this excitement there is a home meet this week!  Wedg vs Wood on Thursday. Please note that the pool will not be open for general swim that afternoon but will be open for the afternoon lap swim from 2:30-3:30.

Also the pool will stay open an little bit longer this coming Friday and Saturday – 8pm closing!

See you at the pool this week.

TIME TRIALS (for 12 & Unders only) – Saturday, June 10th @ 10:00 am (warm-up begins at 9:30)

Time Trials is basically a baseline test for the swimmers in our younger three age groups. We like getting times for them all at the beginning of the year, so we know where they started and track the improvement as the summer goes along. This will not take very long, we will ask each swimmer to try each of the strokes (this is not required, they can do any or all of the events) and it moves along pretty quickly. I assume we’ll be finished by 11:30 am.

We will be talking to the swimmers about this during the week and making sure we’re preparing them for what to expect.
