Monthly Archives: July 2015

ready set…

This week there’s really not much going on other than it’s the lull before the All City storm. There will be no early closures, no home meets, no big events.  Just more swimming and what’s looking to be another round of hot, but not too hot weather.  Oh, and just a little bit of meet prep too.

The mega-bleacher set up will start sometime on Thursday and will necessitate closure of about a third of the west side of the parking lot and the “south beach” grassy area.  We will be setting up other things as well but will do so on the weekend and early next week.

I did want to pass along an FYI that I will be turning down the heat starting either Thursday or Friday this week in an attempt to get the pool temp down to somewhere around 78-79 degrees for next Tuesdays’ meet.  It’s likely going to feel pretty darn cold by the end of the weekend, or at least that’s my hope.  It will be great for swimming laps and taking quick dips, but to be honest it might just be a bit cold for everything else.

Please note that we are not scheduling any parties this coming weekend, but bringing guests in should be fine.  If the weather cranks up like it did the weekend just prior to this past one, this may change, but for now things look okay other than the pool being a bit colder.

Finally, don’t forget, the pool will be closed next Tuesday, August 4th for the All City meet and will also close early at 4pm on Wednesday, August 5th, for the swim team end of the year celebration.

helping hands
I have a couple of people that have said they would lend a hand with parking and traffic control for the All City Meet.  I’m looking for probably a couple more to lend a hand.  We’ll need help primarily from about 12:30-3:30pm.  I’m also going to need a hand disassembling the bleachers after All Cities and I anticipate that to start shortly after the end of the meet, say 7:15ish.  I can use probably 6-8 people for this task.  I’m not sure how long it will take but I’m guessing a couple three hours.  Send me an email or call the pool office and let me know if you’re in.  There are plenty of other tasks that need to be taken care of as well including concessions so don’t be shy. Remember you won’t get another opportunity to volunteer at a WW All City meet for another 14 years!

thirsty club update
Well the meeting with Seattle Public Utilities pretty much confirmed that the higher than normal water consumption is primarily due to the fantastic weather and how busy the pool has been.  We came to a consensus that the shower usage is the biggest factor by a long shot.  So again, if you haven’t had the discussion about shorter showers with your own kids please do so, and if you see others taking longer than they should please let a staff member know.  As swim team winds down now we should see a significant drop in water use.  Remember, every little bit adds up.

water polo
We are getting really close to posting the 2015 details and registration for water polo.

watershow
Sign-ups will get underway later this week.  The Watershow is scheduled for Saturday, August 22nd.  Practices will be held the week prior the show and likely start around the 13th or 14th of August.

directories are in
We have way more than one hundred copies of the directory sitting in the office ready for pick-up.  Please do so before next year’s directory is published.

wifi
After 357 days, countless phone calls, emails, and meeting with people a half dozen times, the wifi is finally in!  It was not an easy road to go down whatsoever.

See you at the pool,

Raab

winding down, or not

This week we say farewell to the dual meet season Tuesday at View Ridge and kick off the championship season with B-Champs at Sand Point on Friday morning.  Fun times ahead for sure!

In the days and weeks ahead we will start the push for the big All City Meet on August 4th. Love it or hate it, it’s a really big deal and won’t come around to WW again until 2029.  So look for the call for volunteers, as we will need plenty of help to make this both a successful and fun event. We could not do it without some extra helping hands!

Around WW this week it’s going to be pretty uneventful.  No early closures, no meets, no big events.  Just more swimming and what’s looking like another great week of weather.

thirsty club
Many of you may have seen the message on the whiteboard in the lobby about our water usage this year, which has been significantly higher this season.  Not surprisingly evaporation and swimmer carry out have probably been at all time highs, coupling this with kids that like to take the super long showers after lessons and swim team, and well, that’s an area where we can make some reduction for sure.  I’m actually meeting with someone from Seattle Public Utilities to take a look at ways we can reduce the consumption.  I’ll share with you what I find out, in the meantime, you can also help by talking to your own kids about those long showers and intervening with others when you feel appropriate.  The staff will be roaming when we can as well.  Perhaps together we can curb things a tad.

last call for the lost and found
We will be taking the lost and found away and donating it to charity on Friday this week.  Unless something is clearly marked with a name, it will not be saved.  So please, if you lost something, the next few days is the time to retrieve it.

water polo
For those new here at WW and the SSSL, water polo is a much more, way more, laid-back activity than the swim team.  This laid-backness, if you will, is a league thing and not really a WW thing.  If I could I would have had all the ducks lined up and matches already on the calendar,  as of yet that has not been done or even been possible.  Despite this though it’s almost that time of year when water polo usually is starting up.  Currently coach Sarah has said she is willing to step in, but not alone, so we’re working on finding some more coaching coverage, so stay tuned.  At the same time Jacque Ives, who has been the parent lead and league representative for polo for the last several year now, is also looking for someone to start taking over her role as well.  If you have kids that play, and are interested, you might just touch base with her.  Her number can be found in the pool directory.  That leads me to…

directories are in

We should know by the end of the week…

half way?!

Yep, believe it or not this coming Wednesday marks the half-way point of the season, but what a fantastic half it has been!

I wanted to extend a thank you to all that came out to the pool on Saturday night for the food truck and cake bake.  While it was definitely disappointing that the food truck ran out of food, the cake bake was indeed fantastic.

We’ll look into another go at food trucking at some point, and figure on having more food, perhaps 2 trucks, and maybe changing the time frame too.

This week at the pool is pretty much as ordinary as they come. Other than the home meet on Thursday, it’s just another seven days of swimming outside in what now appears to be more typical Seattle summer weather.

Something I wanted to briefly touch base on this week is what to do in the event of an emergency at the pool, and in particular, what do you do if you hear the lifeguard blow his or her whistle and/or begin initiating a rescue.

Whether you find yourself on the deck or in the water, in the event that your hear a whistle, STOP and LISTEN. The staff will give instructions on what they need you to do.  They may ask you to stay put, get out of the pool, or if needed, might ask for your assistance.

As a staff we prepare for varying types and degrees of incidents on a regular basis.  This coming Monday and Tuesday we will be conducting scenarios during hours that the pool will be open, so you may indeed be witness, if not part of these drills.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

wifi
The word on the street is that we have an install date for the wifi…  Not holding my breath though.

apples
We have a couple of apple trees on the pool property and it appears that the apples on them are ready and ripe.  If you or someone you know would like some apples you are welcome to them.  They’d be great for making some apple sauce or pie. We have a basket picker on a pole at the pool available too.  Feel free to come on down and pick them.

See you at the pool,

Raab

cake bake, food truck, fun float!

Well the weather has turned just enough to get that cake baked!

Remember, on Saturday evening we have the annual Cake Bake extravaganza.  This year’s theme is Mythology. If you plan to take on the challenge of baking up a real beauty be sure to plan accordingly and get it to the pool in time.  Cakes should arrive between 5:45-6:45pm. The cakes will be on display for all to see from 7-7:30pm, after which, judging will occur. Prizes will be awarded by age groups: 8 and under, 9-12, the teen years, mixed ages, and the family affair.  All of the cakes will then be cut and served. Everyone present will be able to enjoy cake and ice cream to their heart’s desire.

It will also be Almost Anything Goes in the pool from 7-9:30pm during the event, so you can bring your air mattress, inner tube, or other crazy devices. Also please note that the lap lanes will not be in the pool during this time.

Along with the cake thing we are trying something new this year.  We will also be having a food trailer/truck on site from 5-9pm.  This truck’s usual location is on 86th and 35th NE, next to Wells Fargo.  Come and enjoy some Indonesian/Thai food.  Note:  Cash only.  I’m hoping for a good showing so that we can continue to have food trucks occasionally make an appearance. So plan on making an evening of it, come on down and have dinner at the truck and cake and ice cream for dessert.  See the truck menu below.

Sunday it’s just regular old pool hours, nothing special, other than swimming outside in the summer!

See you at the pool,

Raab
